Two questions that need two answers
Two questions sit here, and they are not one question in two parts. The first asks you to choose two landmarks and defend the choice; the second asks how technology changed the arts, with examples. A paper that blends them produces a tour of the late nineteenth century and answers neither. Give each its own section under its own heading, because the grader is checking two things and will look for them separately. The first is an argument you have to win — representative is a claim, not a fact, and two people can pick different landmarks and both be right if the reasoning holds. The second is a demonstration, and the instruction *provide specific examples* is doing real work: it rules out the generalisation that technology made art more modern, which is true, unfalsifiable, and worth nothing. Name the technology, name the work, and show the connection between them.
Start by deciding what the label is claiming, because you cannot argue that something represents an age without saying what the age was. *Age of Materialism* is a period label applied to roughly the 1850s to 1900 in Western Europe and the United States, and it carries a judgement: that the era's defining commitments were industrial production, engineering capability, commerce, empire and measurable progress, over the spiritual and Romantic preoccupations of the generation before. That is a contestable characterisation, and saying so briefly is a strength rather than a hedge. The same decades produced Symbolism, the Gothic Revival and a broad religious response to industrial life, none of which is materialist. You do not need to resolve that tension. You need to show you noticed it, then choose landmarks that speak to the label you have just defined.
The word *landmark* is genuinely ambiguous and the choice is yours, provided you make it explicit in a sentence. It can mean a physical monument — the Eiffel Tower of 1889, the Brooklyn Bridge of 1883, the Statue of Liberty of 1886 — or a landmark achievement, which would let you argue for the daguerreotype or the transcontinental railway. Either reading is defensible; drifting between them is not, and it is the most common way this paper loses marks. Once the reading is fixed, the criterion carries the argument. Saying the Eiffel Tower is representative because it is famous is not an argument. Saying it is representative because a nation marked a revolution's centenary with a wrought-iron tower built to no purpose beyond demonstrating that it could be built is an argument, and it is one the era's own critics made against it.
For the technology question, four specific mechanisms are available and each has a documented example behind it. Photography, made public in 1839, took over the descriptive task painting had held for centuries and pushed painters toward what a camera could not do. Industrial chemistry produced the synthetic pigments — cerulean blue, synthetic ultramarine — that made Impressionist canvases shocking to eyes trained on academic painting, so the technology is literally in the paint. The expanding railway network moved Parisians into the countryside every weekend and put suburban leisure on the canvas as a subject. And iron and glass construction changed what a building could be. Any two of these, developed properly with a named work, beats all four listed and none explained. The 1889 exhibition halls and the great railway termini put structural iron on display rather than hiding it behind stone, which is a change in what architecture was willing to admit about how it was made.
The failure mode for this paper is description. A student who describes the Eiffel Tower's height and construction dates, then describes Impressionism, has written something accurate that answers neither question, because neither question asked what these things were. Both asked for a relation: this landmark represents that culture, this technology produced that change in art. Every paragraph should be checkable against one of those two relations, and anything that is not should come out. Keep the two sections roughly balanced — the second question is not an afterthought, and it is the easier of the two to evidence, since the causal links between photography, pigment chemistry and what painters actually did are documented rather than a matter of taste. If you are short of space, cut the description rather than the second section, because a grader can see at a glance which of the two questions you found easier and the imbalance reads as avoidance.

Search sequence
- 1.Fix the definition of the period first, from the course text if it supplies one, since the label 'Age of Materialism' is a textbook framing rather than a universal term and your reader has a specific one in mind.
- 2.For each candidate landmark, find a source that describes why it was built and how contemporaries reacted, because the contemporary reaction is what turns a description into evidence of what the era valued.
- 3.For the technology question, chase the material fact rather than the movement: which pigments were new, when photography became public, what the railways changed about where painters worked.
- 4.Prefer museum and heritage sources over general encyclopaedias, since they name works and dates you can quote precisely enough to count as a specific example.
