Application paper: professional associations review
A template-driven review of three professional associations whose method is buried in a line marked HINT — start from job postings and work back to the associations, not the other way round.

Where should the professional associations review actually start?
The brief hides its method in a line labelled HINT, and following it is the difference between a paper that works and one that reads like three brochure summaries: *look up jobs that you desire, see what the requirements are, then find the associations that will help you meet those requirements*. That is the assignment's actual sequence, and it runs backwards from where most students start. Do not begin by browsing the list of associations and picking three that sound relevant. Begin with real job postings for the role you want, extract the credentials, skills and experience they ask for, and only then go looking for the associations that supply them. Your selection criteria come from the job market, not from the list. Quote one or two postings in the paper itself, since that turns your selection criteria from an assertion into evidence a marker can see.
Notice too that the association list is explicitly not a menu you must choose from. The brief says you may also choose non-health care and other associations that are not on the list — so if the postings you found ask for a project management credential, a data analytics certification or a human resources qualification, the association that offers it is a legitimate choice even though it appears nowhere in the examples. Choosing a body from outside the list, and justifying that choice by reference to a posting, is stronger evidence that you did the exercise properly than choosing three that were handed to you. Say explicitly why the off-list body was chosen, because an unexplained departure from the examples looks like carelessness rather than judgement.
Concrete detail is what separates the three write-ups, and it is readily available because these bodies publish it. Credentialing is the most useful axis: ACMPE board certification requires two exams, fifty continuing education hours and a final board submission, with three years to complete it; HFMA offers nine certifications plus an executive designation, each carrying continuing professional education credits; AHIMA runs distinct credentials across coding, health information management, privacy and security, data analytics and documentation integrity. Requirements, cost, timeframe and what the credential is actually called are all checkable facts, and they make a comparison possible. Put those figures side by side in a small table if the template allows it, since a comparison is much harder to make in prose across three separate write-ups.
Be careful with the earnings claims these organisations publish, because citing them uncritically is an easy way to weaken an otherwise good paper. Associations report that certified members earn more than non-certified counterparts, and AHIMA reports an average around $114K for professionals holding four or more of its credentials. Those are self-reported figures from interested parties, and they do not establish that the credential caused the earnings — people who pursue four credentials differ from those who pursue none in many ways. Report the figure, attribute it to the association, and note what it does and does not show. That single move demonstrates source evaluation rather than source repetition. One sentence of qualification is enough, and it is the sentence that distinguishes a reviewed source from a repeated one.
Two mechanical points. The paper is built on a supplied **Professional Associations Template**, and the brief says to follow the prompts on it — so the template's fields, not your own headings, are the structure, and you should download it before drafting anything. APA format and citation of sources are required, which for association websites means citing the specific page you used with its retrieval context rather than the organisation's homepage. Note finally that several of the brief's own links are dated — it references the 2010-11 edition of the Occupational Outlook Handbook and several URLs that have since moved — so use the current versions and do not assume a broken link means the body is gone. Download the template first and read all of its prompts before writing anything, because retrofitting prose into someone else's fields never works cleanly.
Step | What to do | The version that fails |
|---|---|---|
Start point | Real job postings for your target role | Browsing the association list first |
Selection criteria | Requirements extracted from those postings | “This association seemed relevant” |
Scope | Any association, on or off the supplied list | Assuming the list is a closed menu |
Detail per association | Credentials, exams, CE hours, cost, timeframe | Mission statement and member benefits |
Earnings claims | Reported, attributed, and qualified | Quoted as evidence the credential pays |
Structure | The supplied template's prompts | Your own essay headings |
Likely learning objectives
Inferred from the brief — check these against your own rubric.
- 01Derive selection criteria from labour market evidence rather than from a supplied list.
- 02Compare professional bodies on verifiable requirements rather than on stated mission.
- 03Evaluate self-reported evidence published by an interested party.
- 04Work within a supplied template's structure rather than imposing your own.

If you have not heard from me within 24 hours and need to contact me urgently, please send a follow up text to. I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. Your assignments in weeks 4 and 5 require early planning as you would need to present a teaching plan and interview a community health provider. I advise you look at the requirements for these assignments at the beginning of the course and plan accordingly. I have posted the YouTube link that explains all the class assignments in detail. It is required that you watch this 32-minute video as the assignments from week 3 through 5 require that you follow the instructions to the letter to succeed. Failure to complete these assignments according to instructions might lead to a zero. After watching the video, please schedule a one-on-one with me to discuss your topic for your project by the second week of class. Use this link to schedule a 15-minute session. Please, call me at the time of your appointment on my number. Please note that I will NOT call you. Please, be advised I do NOT accept any assignments by email. If you are having technical issues with uploading an assignment, contact the technical department and inform me of the issue. If you have any issues that would prevent you from getting your assignments to me by the deadline, please inform me to request a possible extension. Note that working fulltime or overtime is no excuse for late assignments. There is a 5%-point deduction for every day your assignment is late. This only applies to approved extensions. Late assignments will not be accepted. If you think you would be needing accommodations due to any reasons, please contact the appropriate department to request accommodations. Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements. Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week. I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
What the template requires

- 02The completed Professional Associations Template, following its prompts.
- 03Cited sources for every association.
- 04APA format throughout.
From job postings to three justified associations
Career objective and evidence
State the target role and what current postings actually require.
Association one
Cover its credentials, requirements, cost, timeframe and fit to the identified needs.
Association two
Same treatment, ideally covering a requirement the first does not.
Association three
Same treatment, considering a body outside the supplied list where the postings justify it.
Evaluation and choice
Weigh the three against cost, effort and what each actually delivers.
Finding credential requirements rather than mission statements
Recommended databases
- Job boards for your target role
- The Occupational Outlook Handbook, current edition
- Association certification and membership pages
- The supplied Professional Associations Template
Search sequence
- 1.Search current postings for the specific role you want and record the credentials, skills and experience they name. This is the evidence base the rest of the paper rests on.
- 2.Download the template before drafting, since its prompts define what each association write-up has to contain and drafting first means rewriting.
- 3.Go to each association's certification or credentialing page rather than its about page, because requirements, exam structure and continuing education hours are what make the comparison substantive.
- 4.Check the current edition of any government occupational source the brief cites; the edition it names is well over a decade old and the figures have moved.
Association credentialing sources
These are authoritative starting points, not a ready-made bibliography. A qualified reviewer must confirm that each source fits the assignment and supports the claim beside which it is cited.
Nothing here is cleared for citation until you have read it.
- 01
ACMPE Board Certification
Medical Group Management Association / American College of Medical Practice Executives · 2024
A model of the detail each write-up should contain: two exams, fifty continuing education hours, a final board submission, and three years from application to complete it, leading to the CMPE credential with an ongoing maintenance requirement. Note its claim that certified members report earning more — a self-reported figure worth citing and qualifying rather than repeating.
- 02
Certifications
Healthcare Financial Management Association · 2024
Useful when your target role sits on the finance or revenue-cycle side. It sets out nine certifications plus an executive designation and a micro-credential, each carrying continuing professional education credits, across revenue cycle, accounting, managed care and physician practice management — which lets you match a specific credential to a specific posting requirement.
- 03
AHIMA Certification
American Health Information Management Association · 2024
Covers credentials across coding (CCA, CCS, CCS-P), health information management (RHIT, RHIA), documentation integrity, data analytics and privacy and security — a useful contrast with the management-focused bodies. Its reported average of about $114K for holders of four or more credentials is exactly the kind of association-published earnings claim your paper should attribute and qualify rather than adopt.
Before the application paper is submitted
Common mistakes
- Choosing associations first and rationalising the choice afterwards.
- Ignoring the HINT, which contains the assignment's intended method.
- Treating the supplied list as a closed menu when the brief says it is not.
- Summarising each association's mission statement instead of its requirements.
- Omitting credential names, exam structures, CE hours, cost and timeframes.
- Quoting association earnings figures as proof that certification causes higher pay.
- Replacing the template's prompts with your own essay headings.
- Using the brief's dated links without checking for current versions.
Submission checklist
- Job postings for the target role were consulted and their requirements listed.
- Each association is justified against those requirements.
- Three associations are covered.
- Specific credentials are named for each, with their requirements.
- Any earnings claim is attributed and qualified.
- The template's prompts are all answered in its own structure.
- Every association claim is cited to the specific page used.
- APA formatting is applied to citations and references.
