ASAHP Allied Health Definition and Interdependence Guide

The definition is residual — drawn by reference to other professions. That form is itself the answer to the second question.

01

The shape of the definition is the argument

Two questions, and the second cannot be answered without the first being answered precisely. How does ASAHP define the allied health professions, and how is that definition consistent with the interdependence described in this week's reading? The link between them is not obvious until you notice something about the *form* of the definition rather than its content. That observation is the whole answer, and a post that paraphrases the definition and then separately asserts that health care is a team effort has produced two true statements with nothing joining them. Find the join and the post writes itself; miss it and no amount of detail about individual professions will substitute. The prompt is short, which usually means the marker expects depth on one idea rather than coverage of several, and this is the idea available. Everyone in the thread will have the same definition in front of them, so the differentiator is what you notice about it.

The form worth noticing is that allied health is defined *residually*. The category is conventionally drawn as the credentialed health professions other than medicine, nursing, dentistry and pharmacy — a group identified by what it sits alongside rather than by a single shared body of knowledge. That is unusual for a professional category and it is the key to the second question: a definition constructed by reference to other professions is *already* a statement about interdependence. Allied health cannot be defined in isolation because the category has no meaning in isolation, which is a stronger answer than observing that these practitioners happen to work in teams. It also explains why the boundary shifts between sources: some lists include respiratory therapy and medical laboratory science while excluding others, because a residual category has no internal principle fixing its edge. Saying that the edge is contested is accurate rather than evasive.

The content of the definition supplies the second half of the argument. ASAHP describes a broad range of credentialed professionals delivering diagnostic, technical, therapeutic and direct patient care and support services — categories that describe *functions within a process of care* rather than an independent scope of practice. A diagnostic function presupposes someone who ordered the test and someone who will act on the result. A therapeutic function presupposes a referral and a plan. So the functional vocabulary the definition uses is relational at the level of individual words, which is a precise piece of evidence rather than a general impression. Pick one function from the definition and trace it through a real episode of care — an imaging study ordered, performed, reported and acted on — and the relational structure becomes visible rather than asserted. That single worked example is worth more than restating the whole definition.

There is a detail in the quoted vision statement itself that repays attention. ASAHP calls itself the unifying voice and leading advocate for allied health *education* — it is an association of schools rather than of practitioners. That shapes the definition it produces: a body representing educational programmes needs a boundary that accreditation and curriculum can work with, which pushes toward enumerating credentialed professions rather than toward a conceptual account. Noticing whose definition it is, and what work that definition has to do, is the sort of reading a marker rewards on a short prompt where everyone will otherwise write similar things. It also explains a feature you might otherwise read as vagueness: an accreditation-facing definition has to accommodate professions that will be added later, so a degree of openness is deliberate rather than careless.

The second question names a specific source — the interdependence described in this week's reading from Professionalism in Health Care — so the answer has to engage that text rather than the idea in general. Go back to it and find how it characterises interdependence: whether as mutual reliance on each other's competence, as shared accountability for an outcome, as overlapping scopes requiring negotiation, or as something else. Then show the ASAHP definition meeting that specific characterisation. A post that cites the reading has answered the question asked; a post that describes teamwork has answered a question about teamwork. If the reading distinguishes interdependence from mere cooperation, that distinction is worth carrying into your answer, because the ASAHP definition supports the stronger reading rather than the weaker one. Where the reading uses a specific term for the relationship, use that term rather than a synonym, since the question is checking that you read it.

Be careful with one framing that sounds respectful and undercuts the argument. Describing allied health as *supporting* physicians and nurses reintroduces a hierarchy the interdependence claim is meant to displace, and it does not survive contact with the facts: allied health professions make up the majority of the health workforce and many of them hold autonomous scopes within their own domains. Interdependence means mutual reliance, not assistance flowing one way, and getting that distinction right is what separates a post that understands the concept from one that has adopted its vocabulary. The practical consequence is worth a clause: interdependence implies each profession can fail the others, which is a claim about accountability rather than about goodwill and is what makes the concept do work. It also gives the post somewhere to go beyond agreement, because a reader can be asked whether their own discipline relies on allied health professions in ways they had not named.

Scale is worth one sentence because it makes the point concrete. If allied health accounts for the majority of health care workers, then a definition that treats these professions as residual is describing most of the workforce by reference to a minority of it — which tells you the category is organisational and historical rather than natural. That observation is not a criticism of ASAHP; it is an explanation of why the definition takes the form it does, and it strengthens rather than weakens the consistency argument you are making. Give the figure a source rather than asserting it, since a workforce proportion is exactly the kind of claim a marker will check and exactly the kind that circulates without attribution. The historical route matters too: the category was assembled around mid-century workforce needs and accreditation structures rather than derived from a theory of practice.

Keep the post proportionate to a two-question prompt. Two or three paragraphs will do: what the definition says and what shape it has, the reading's account of interdependence, and the join between them. Cite ASAHP for the definition and the assigned reading for the interdependence claim, since both questions point at a specific source and quoting each once is the cheapest way to show you consulted them. Resist listing allied health professions at length, because the prompt asks how the category is defined rather than what it contains. If your course expects a peer response as well, the residual-definition point is a productive thing to put in front of classmates, because it invites disagreement about where the category's edge should fall. Two well-chosen quotations and one worked example will fill a post of that length without padding.

The vision statement of The Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions (ASAHP) says that it is “the unifying voice and leading advocate for allied health education.” How does it define the allied health professions? How is this definition consistent with the interdependence described in this week’s reading from Professionalism in Health Care?
Course-wide instructions that accompany this question

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes. Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages. Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor. The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument. ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CLASS Discussion Questions (DQ) Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, include a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words. Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source. One or two sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words. I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses. Weekly Participation Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately. In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies. Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work). Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week. APA Format and Writing Quality Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required). Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation. I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition. Use of Direct Quotes I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly. As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content. It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source. LopesWrite Policy For assignments that need to be submitted to LopesWrite, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me. Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes. Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own? Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score. Late Policy The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies. Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances. If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect. I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension. As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading. Communication Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me: Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class. Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours. Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions

What the reading says about interdependence

Set out the specific account given in the assigned text.

03

Where the argument could be pressed

Acknowledge the contested edge of the category and what follows for the claim.

04

Search sequence

  1. 1.
Read ASAHP's own definition in its own words before anything else, since the question asks how *it* defines the professions and a secondhand summary will not support close reading.
  2. 2.
Reread the assigned chapter and mark the specific sentences where interdependence is characterised, because the second question is anchored to that text.
  3. 3.
Find literature on how health care team roles are named and bounded, which supports the argument about what a residual definition implies.
  4. 4.
Look for workforce figures for allied health, so the scale point is a number rather than an impression.
