Autonomous doctoral learning APA paper: a planning guide

The stated purpose is to demonstrate APA — so the formatting is assessed as content, and the no-I-statements rule quietly rules out the way most people write about their own study habits.

01

What is the doctoral learning APA paper actually testing?

The first line tells you what is really being marked: the purpose of the assignment is to demonstrate your working knowledge of APA format by writing a paper. Topic and format are being assessed together, and the topic was chosen because it forces you to cite. So treat every APA decision as a graded decision — the title page, the running head if your programme still requires one, heading levels, the reference list's hanging indent and alphabetical order, and above all the in-text citations. A paper with excellent content and inconsistent citation formatting fails its own stated purpose. The instruction to review the APA quiz questions before starting is a direct hint about which rules will be checked, so work through them first and keep the list beside you while drafting rather than treating the quiz as separate revision.

The second instruction is easy to underestimate and hard to comply with: write from a formal standpoint and do not use I-statements. That is a real constraint on a paper about your own learning, because the natural sentence is "I plan to schedule two hours each morning". The fix is not the passive voice everywhere, which produces unreadable prose. Recast the claim as a general one supported by evidence and let the recommendation stand impersonally — "doctoral learners who protect a fixed daily writing block report higher completion rates" does the work of the first-person sentence and can be cited. Watch for the smuggled first person too: "in this writer's opinion" and "one feels" are I-statements in disguise, and so is a recommendations section written as a personal plan. The register the rule is pushing you toward is the one doctoral writing actually uses, which is presumably why it is imposed on a paper about becoming a doctoral learner.

The four required elements are sequential and each has its own evidence demand. The first asks about learning experiences prior to doctoral study, which means the paper opens comparatively rather than diving into doctoral work: taught coursework, structured assessment, syllabus-defined reading, an instructor who sets the pace. The second asks you to research what makes doctoral learning autonomous and how the skills differ. The distinction worth landing is that the change is not simply more independence but a change of role — the learner sets the question, defines the standard of sufficiency, and manages a project without externally imposed deadlines between milestones. That is why self-regulation, not effort, is the operative skill. Undergraduate and taught master's study reward responsiveness; doctoral study rewards initiation, and a great many capable students discover that those are different capacities.

The third element is a literature review of five scholarly articles on strategies for success in doctoral programmes, and it is a stated minimum you should meet exactly rather than approximately. A literature review is not five summaries in a row; it is an account of what the five collectively say, where they agree and where they diverge. Group them thematically — supervision quality, integration into an academic community, time and workload management, psychological well-being, financial security — and the section will read as a review. The available evidence supports that framing: recent scoping work on PhD completion clusters the factors into candidate characteristics, institutional structures and supervision, and finds that withdrawal is typically multi-causal rather than traceable to a single failure. Note where your five sources disagree as well, because a review in which every article says the same thing usually means the five were chosen to agree.

The fourth element must follow from the third, and this is where papers lose coherence. Every strategy you recommend should be attributable to something in your review. If you recommend a writing group, the review should have established why isolation predicts attrition; if you recommend regular structured supervision meetings, the review should have shown supervision quality mattering. Recommendations that arrive with no antecedent read as personal preference, which is doubly awkward in a paper that forbids first-person claims. A workable pattern is one paragraph per strategy: name it, attribute the finding that justifies it, then state concretely what it looks like in practice — a frequency, a person, a milestone. Three well-evidenced strategies will outscore six listed ones in a paper this short, and the word count leaves room for little else once the review is done properly.

One useful piece of evidence for the autonomy argument comes from the self-regulated learning literature rather than from doctoral studies specifically: reviews of interventions supporting self-regulation in distance and higher education find prompts to be the most versatile support, and note that emotion regulation is the least studied component even though it travels closely with motivation. That maps neatly onto the doctoral problem, where the failure mode is rarely ignorance of what to do and frequently an inability to start. Using it lets you argue that a plan for success needs external scaffolding — deadlines someone else sees, scheduled accountability — precisely because autonomy removes the scaffolding the earlier learning experiences supplied. That argument also ties the four elements into one line of reasoning rather than four answers, which is what a 750 to 1,000 word paper needs to feel finished.

Likely learning objectives

Inferred from the brief — check these against your own rubric.

  • 01
Apply APA formatting as an assessed skill rather than as presentation.
  • 02
Make personal claims impersonally without collapsing into the passive voice.
  • 03
Write a literature review as a synthesis rather than as sequential summaries.
  • 04
Derive recommendations from reviewed evidence instead of from preference.

The purpose of the assignment is to demonstrate your working knowledge of APA format by writing a paper. The doctoral Learning process is uniquely autonomous. It is important to develop individual plans for success and use personal strategies to reach your goals. General Requirements: • Review the APA Quiz questions prior to beginning work on your paper. • When writing this paper ensure you are speaking from a formal standpoint and are not using I-statements. • Doctoral learners are required to use APA style for their writing assignments. • You are required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite. Please refer to the directions in the Student Success Center. Directions: In 750-1,000 words, construct a paper that addresses the following. • Discuss learning experiences one may face prior to the doctoral learning experience. Support your discussion with scholarly evidence. • Research the autonomous nature of doctoral learning. Discuss how doctoral programs and learning skills and strategies employed when completing them is different than other learning experience. • Conduct a literature review of five scholarly articles related to strategies for success in doctoral programs. • Based upon your research discuss specific strategies you recommend when developing a plan for successful completion of a doctoral program.
Course-wide instructions that accompany this question

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes. Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages. Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor. The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.

Prior learning, autonomy, review, recommendations

01

Learning experiences prior to doctoral study

Characterise taught, structured learning with evidence, establishing the baseline the doctoral comparison depends on.

02

The autonomous nature of doctoral learning

Explain what changes at doctoral level — who sets the question, who defines sufficiency, who manages the schedule — and which skills that demands.

03

Literature review: strategies for doctoral success

Synthesise five scholarly articles thematically, noting where they agree and where they conflict.

04

Recommended strategies for completion

Propose specific strategies, each traceable to a finding established in the review.

04

Where the doctoral completion evidence is

Recommended databases

  • ERIC
  • PubMed Central and Frontiers for open-access education research
  • Your university library's higher education databases
  • APA Style website for the format rules being assessed

Search sequence

  1. 1.
Search PhD or doctoral completion and attrition rather than study skills; the completion literature is where the evidence on strategies actually lives.
  2. 2.
Collect your five articles before drafting the review, then group them by theme rather than by publication date.
  3. 3.
Look for one source on self-regulated learning to support the autonomy argument, since the doctoral literature tends to describe the problem rather than the mechanism.
  4. 4.
Read the APA in-text citation and paper format pages before writing, not while proofreading; the format is the assessed skill and retrofitting it is where errors creep in.
05

Sources for completion, self-regulation and APA

These are authoritative starting points, not a ready-made bibliography. A qualified reviewer must confirm that each source fits the assignment and supports the claim beside which it is cited.

Nothing here is cleared for citation until you have read it.

  1. 01

Factors related to PhD completion among doctoral candidates: a systematic scoping review

    Frontiers in Education · 2026

Forty-two studies clustered into candidate characteristics, institutional structures and supervision, with withdrawal shown as multi-causal. The natural spine for the thematic grouping in your literature review, and a defensible fifth or first article in the required five.

  2. 02

Supporting Self-Regulated Learning in Distance Learning Contexts at Higher Education Level: Systematic Literature Review

    Frontiers in Psychology · 2022

Thirty-eight studies on interventions supporting self-regulation, finding prompts the most versatile and emotion regulation the least studied. Use it to argue why autonomy demands external scaffolding; it is about distance learning rather than doctoral study, so say so when you transfer the finding.

  3. 03

    In-text citations

    American Psychological Association · 2024

The authoritative rules for parenthetical and narrative citation, paraphrase and quotation, and secondary sources. Since demonstrating APA is the stated purpose of the paper, check your citations against this rather than against a formatting generator.

  4. 04

    Paper Format

    American Psychological Association · 2024

Margins, spacing, font, alignment and the structure of a student paper. The other half of the format marks; read the student-paper variant rather than the professional one unless your programme specifies otherwise.

Before you submit to LopesWrite

Common mistakes

  • Treating APA as presentation rather than as the assessed purpose of the assignment.
  • Replacing I-statements with heavy passive constructions that obscure who does what.
  • Smuggling the first person back in through 'this writer' or 'one feels'.
  • Skipping the prior-learning element and opening directly on doctoral study, which removes the comparison the second element needs.
  • Describing autonomy as simply more independence rather than as a change in who sets the question and the standard.
  • Writing the literature review as five consecutive summaries with no synthesis.
  • Citing fewer than five scholarly articles in the review section.
  • Recommending strategies with no antecedent in the reviewed literature.

Submission checklist

  • Title page, headings and reference list all follow APA 7.
  • Every in-text citation has a matching reference and vice versa.
  • No first-person pronouns or first-person substitutes appear.
  • Prior learning experiences are discussed with scholarly support.
  • Autonomy is characterised as a change in role, not only in supervision intensity.
  • Exactly five or more scholarly articles are reviewed, and they are synthesised thematically.
  • Each recommended strategy traces to a source in the review.
  • The word count sits between 750 and 1,000.
  • The paper has been run through LopesWrite.
