What does this toxin transport discussion require?
The note at the end of this prompt is not a footnote, it is the instruction that decides the mark. Avoid only talking about the oil spill affecting people in Mexico. The spill is the starting point, the thing you consider, and the actual question is general: describe the various mechanisms and pathways that transport toxins to the environment. So use the spill to illustrate a mechanism and then move outward. A post that recounts what happened in the Gulf, however accurately, has answered a question that was not asked, and the prompt anticipates that so directly that ignoring it looks like not having read to the end. A useful test before posting is to ask whether your answer would still stand if the example had been a pesticide application or a mine tailings release instead of a spill; if it would not, you have written about the incident rather than about transport.
Mechanism and pathway are worth separating, because the prompt names both and they are not the same thing. A pathway is the route a substance takes, so through air, through surface water, through groundwater, through soil, or through the food chain. A mechanism is the physical or chemical process that moves it along that route, so dissolution, evaporation and subsequent deposition, adsorption onto particles, suspension in currents, uptake across a membrane, or transport inside an organism that then moves. Setting the answer out as pathways with their mechanisms attached gives it a structure, and it means the spill becomes one worked example inside a larger frame rather than the frame itself. Biomagnification is what happens between trophic levels: each consumer eats many individuals from the level below, so the concentration multiplies as you move up the food web, and top predators carry the highest burdens. Close by connecting the pathways rather than listing them, because the interesting property of environmental transport is that substances move between routes. A compound applied to a field can volatilise into air, deposit into a lake, adsorb to sediment, be taken up by invertebrates, biomagnify through fish and reach a person eating them, having travelled by four pathways in sequence. Say that. On format, keep to the length and source requirements your course sets for an initial post, and cite a source that documents transport rather than one that describes a disaster.
