What makes a variable a random variable
A one-sentence prompt is not a small assignment, it is an unconstrained one, and that is harder. Because nothing here tells you how many examples, how deep to go, or what counts as a good answer, the grading falls entirely on whether you have understood the term. So the first decision is to define random variable explicitly before giving any example. A random variable is not simply a characteristic that varies between people. It is a rule that assigns a number to each possible outcome of a random process — a function from a sample space to the real line. Everything that distinguishes a strong post from a list of nouns follows from taking that definition seriously, and it takes two sentences to state.
The trap this prompt sets is that a plausible-sounding answer can be wrong in a way that is invisible unless you know the definition. Age, sex, income and blood pressure are frequently offered, and as written none of them is a random variable — they are attributes of people. What makes one a random variable is the random mechanism you attach to it. The systolic blood pressure of an adult selected at random from a defined population is a random variable, because there is a random experiment producing it. The systolic blood pressure of a particular named patient measured once is a number. Adding the phrase 'selected at random from' converts an attribute into a random variable, and it is the phrase most missing answers are missing.
For each example, then, say three things: the random experiment, the numeric mapping, and the possible values. Take the number of new tuberculosis cases reported in a county in one month. The experiment is the passage of a month with reporting; the mapping counts notifications; the possible values are the non-negative integers. Take the time from symptom onset to hospital presentation for a randomly sampled stroke patient: the experiment is the random selection, the mapping is elapsed hours, the values are positive reals. Written this way each example demonstrates the concept rather than gesturing at it, and three examples handled like this will comfortably outperform eight names in a row.
The discrete-versus-continuous distinction is the obvious structural choice, and it is worth making explicitly because it determines what you can do with the variable later. Discrete variables take countable values, typically because they arise from counting: notifications of a disease, number of people in a household, number of emergency admissions in a shift, number of doses received. Continuous variables can in principle take any value in an interval, because they arise from measuring: blood pressure, serum concentration, birth weight, time to recovery. The reason this matters beyond taxonomy is that the two are described by different kinds of distribution — probability mass against probability density — and the arithmetic you are about to learn differs accordingly.
If you want the post to look like graduate work rather than definition-checking, attach a plausible distribution family to at least one example and say why. Counts of a relatively rare event occurring independently over a fixed period are conventionally modelled as Poisson, which is why case notifications are the standard example. A yes-or-no outcome for one individual — vaccinated or not, seroconverted or not — is Bernoulli, and the number of such successes among a fixed number of independent individuals is binomial. Waiting times are often modelled as exponential. Say the family is a model rather than a fact about the world, since real notification data frequently violate the independence the Poisson assumes, and noticing that is itself a mark of understanding.
Finally, connect at least one example to something public health actually does with it, because the prompt specifies the public health industry rather than asking for examples in general. A random variable is worth defining because you intend to characterise its distribution, estimate its mean, or detect when it has changed. Case counts feed outbreak-detection thresholds. Waiting times feed service standards. Birth weights feed population surveillance for nutritional status. One sentence of that kind, attached to one example, shows why the abstraction earns its place in a public health course, and it prevents the post from reading as a statistics exercise that happened to use medical nouns.
