The first is the word timeline, which names a form rather than a topic: a timeline is dated, ordered, and selective, and a series of prose paragraphs about the history of epidemiology is not one however good the content. The prompt even offers you the option to illustrate it, so a genuine chronological structure with dates attached is the safest reading. The second is that selecting which events belong on it is the intellectual work of the assignment. Any timeline is an argument about what mattered, made by what it includes and omits, so decide early what you are claiming and let the selection carry that claim rather than assembling whatever the search returns. A reader can tell the difference immediately, because a principled timeline explains its own omissions while an assembled one simply stops.

The most useful organising idea is that the history of epidemiology is a history of changing ideas about what causes disease, and a timeline built on that spine reads as an argument rather than a list. Early explanations located disease in the environment — bad air, imbalance, corrupted surroundings — and however wrong the mechanism, they produced sanitary interventions that worked. Germ theory replaced that with a specific agent for a specific disease, and gave the field a criterion of proof. The twentieth century then had to accommodate chronic diseases with no single agent, which produced the multicausal, risk-factor framework the discipline still uses. Jenner's vaccination work, Snow's investigation of cholera transmission in London, Semmelweis on handwashing, Farr's construction of national vital statistics, Koch's postulates as a formal standard of causal proof, the Framingham study introducing the language of risk factors, Doll and Hill on smoking and lung cancer, Bradford Hill's criteria for causal inference, and the eradication of smallpox all mark identifiable changes. You do not need all of them; you need the ones your argument requires. Six or seven well-chosen entries with dates and one line of significance each will read better than a dozen names, and it leaves you room to develop the choice the prompt actually asks you to defend.

The second half of the prompt is where most posts become vague, and the fix is to state a criterion before you name a winner. Significant according to what? Lives saved is one standard, and by it vaccination or sanitation is difficult to beat. Methodological innovation is another, and by that measure Snow or Doll and Hill matter more, because they changed how the field establishes anything. Institutional change is a third — the creation of national statistics or of surveillance systems. Say which standard you are applying, then apply it. Without that step, 'Snow was significant because he identified the source of the outbreak' is circular: it says the event was important because of what it was. Naming the standard also lets a classmate disagree with you productively, which is what turns a discussion board into a discussion rather than twenty parallel summaries.

The most interesting answers usually pick something whose significance is not obvious, and defend the choice. Snow is the conventional pick and there is nothing wrong with it, but a board of twenty students will contain many Snows. Graunt is defensible on the grounds that quantification had to precede everything else. Farr is defensible because routine data collection is what makes surveillance possible at all. The Framingham study is defensible because the idea of a risk factor made chronic disease tractable. Whichever you choose, connect it to something the field does now, since significance is a claim about consequences and consequences are what the reader can check. Framingham is the easiest of these to connect forward, because the phrase risk factor now appears in almost every clinical guideline written.

On sourcing and mechanics, two cautions. First, historical claims need dates you have verified, because dates for these events circulate in slightly different forms and an error in a timeline is unusually visible. Second, avoid the triumphalist framing in which each discovery simply corrects the last, since the sanitary reforms undertaken on the strength of miasma theory reduced mortality substantially while the theory was wrong — a useful reminder that a wrong model can still support effective action. That observation is also the sort of thing that generates replies from classmates, which the participation half of a discussion assignment rewards. Both cautions come down to the same discipline: treat the history as evidence to be handled carefully rather than as a story already known, which is exactly how the course will ask you to treat data later on.
