Why question three is question one in disguise

Three questions, two hundred words each, one permitted textbook, and a block of output whose most consequential feature is a punctuation mark.

Question one closes with Do the two share the same assumptions, yes or no? and it is phrased to invite a one-word answer that cannot be right on its own. The two tests share their assumptions almost entirely: independent observations, categories that are mutually exclusive and exhaustive, expected counts large enough in every cell, and a sample drawn at random. So yes is defensible. What differs is not the assumptions but what is being tested and where the expected counts come from. A goodness-of-fit test compares one variable against a distribution you specify before looking at the data. A test of independence compares two variables, and its expected counts are computed from the row and column totals of the data itself. Degrees of freedom follow directly from that difference. Answer the yes, then spend the rest of the two hundred words on what does differ.

Question three hands you output and never says which of the two tests produced it. That silence is the link between the questions, and working it out is the actual exercise. Read the table: one variable, Do you work?, with two categories; expected counts of exactly ten in each; one degree of freedom. One variable rules out a test of independence immediately. Expected counts of ten and ten out of a total of twenty mean the null hypothesis is an even split, specified in advance rather than derived from margins — which is what a goodness-of-fit test does. And one degree of freedom is k minus one with two categories, not the row-column product that independence would give. Naming the test and showing that reasoning is worth more than any amount of prose about the number itself.

Now the punctuation. The statistic prints as Chi-Square 7,000 and that is seven, not seven thousand — a decimal comma, the convention across much of Europe and in output produced under a matching locale. The same block prints its significance as .007 with a full stop, so the two separators disagree within four lines of each other. A student who writes that the chi-square was seven thousand has not made an arithmetic mistake; they have read a punctuation mark as a thousands separator. The habit that catches it is recomputing from the counts, which takes one line: the residuals are plus and minus six, so the statistic is six squared over ten twice, which is 3.6 plus 3.6. That lands at 7.2 — near seven and nowhere near seven thousand, and doing it takes less time than second-guessing the printed figure.

Recomputing turns up something else, and it is worth saying out loud rather than papering over. The counts give 7.2, not 7.000. At one degree of freedom, 7.2 carries a probability of .0073, which prints as .007 exactly as the output shows; 7.000 carries .0082, which would have printed as .008. So the printed statistic disagrees with both the counts above it and the significance below it, while the counts and the significance agree with each other. The defensible move is not to quietly copy the printed figure. Report the value the data support, show the one line of arithmetic, and note the discrepancy. Being able to say which of two conflicting numbers the evidence favours is a better demonstration of understanding than any explanation of a number taken on trust, and the marker gets to see a check being run rather than a result being repeated.

The instruction to explain this to someone who does not understand statistics is a constraint on vocabulary, and it is where the most common misstatement about p-values appears. A significance of .007 does not mean there is a 0.7 per cent chance the null hypothesis is true, and it does not mean there is a 99.3 per cent chance the finding is real. It means that if working and not working were genuinely equally likely in this population, a split at least as lopsided as sixteen to four would turn up in about seven samples in a thousand. Say that in plain words, then say what it does not license: twenty people is a small sample, and the test says the split is unlikely under an even-odds assumption, not why these particular people work.
