Wealth, not income — and the analysis is of your own life
Notice how much of the prompt is spent separating wealth from income before it asks you anything. That is not throat-clearing — it is telling you which concept the analysis must use. Income is a flow measured over a period; wealth is a stock measured at a moment, and the difference is why two households with identical salaries can occupy very different class positions. Wealth absorbs history: an inheritance, a house bought when prices were low, a family able to cover an emergency without borrowing. That is why the brief says wealth spans past, present and future generations, and why the racial wealth gap it quotes is so much larger than the income gap, and why closing one would not close the other. A post that analyses class through salary alone has quietly ignored the setup it was given, and the marker who wrote that setup will notice immediately.
The prompt also widens class past money, and those extensions carry real analytical weight: the amount of free time you have, and the sense that there is a right way to speak and act in order to be heard. Both are class markers that operate without any reference to income, and both are easier to observe in your own life than net worth is. That matters because the required analysis is personal. Write about something specific and structural rather than confessional — whether a family could absorb a car repair without a crisis, who paid for an unpaid internship, whether your speech was ever corrected in a way that signalled belonging or exclusion. Then connect the individual observation back to the structural pattern, since the assignment is asking you to see your own experience as an instance of something, which is exactly what sociological analysis means.

If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.
