Should you pick two styles, two theories, or one of each?

The brief offers you "styles or theories" and the safest reading is to pick two of the same kind. A style is a pattern of behaviour a leader adopts — autocratic, democratic, laissez-faire. A theory is an explanatory account of what makes leadership effective — transformational, situational, servant, trait. Comparing one style against one theory produces a paper that keeps changing what it is comparing, because the two categories answer different questions: a style tells you what a leader does, a theory tells you why it works. Two styles or two theories will give you a stable axis and a paper that compares the same thing on every page. If you do want to cross the categories — democratic leadership against transformational theory, say — declare it in the introduction and explain what the comparison is holding constant, which turns an incoherence into a deliberate move a marker can follow.

The supplied outline contains a section that most papers merge away and should not. After advantages and disadvantages, it asks you to state the conditions and environment in which both styles or theories would work best. That is a separate question from advantages, and the difference matters: an advantage is a property of the approach, a condition is a property of the situation that makes the advantage available. Autocratic leadership is fast, which is an advantage; it works best in an emergency, in a hierarchical unit, with a competent leader and a task that has a correct answer, which are conditions. Writing that section properly is what turns the paper from a description of two approaches into an argument about when each belongs, and it is the only section a nurse manager reading it would actually use. Write it as a list of situations, each with the approach it favours.

The outline also front-loads two things people leave until the end. The introduction is asked to state a rationale for choosing these two and to say why they are significant — so the choice has to be justified before the comparison begins, and "they are opposites" is thin. A better rationale names a real tension you have seen: a unit where the formal structure is directive and the retention problem is about voice, for instance. And the summary is asked specifically for significance to the nursing profession, not for a restatement of the comparison. That means one clear claim about what this pair of approaches implies for nursing practice, staffing, safety or retention. Two to three pages is short for seven sections, so use the outline's own headings as your headings and let each one be tight rather than trying to write continuous prose across all of them.

Likely learning objectives

Inferred from the brief — check these against your own rubric.

  • 01
Distinguish a leadership style from a leadership theory and choose a comparable pair.
  • 02
Separate an advantage of an approach from a condition that makes it work.
  • 03
Justify a comparison choice before making it.
  • 04
State significance to a profession as a claim rather than as a summary.
  • 05
Work to a supplied outline without collapsing its sections into each other.

Integrate nursing leadership concepts and theories into the various roles of the professional registered nurse to promote safe and high quality nursing care. In this assignment you will select two different leadership styles or theories, and write a 2-3 page paper comparing/contrasting the two. Focus on how the two are similar to each other (comparison), and then describe how they differ (contrast). When you are writing this paper, reflect on analyzing the differences, how and under what conditions would they be utilized, and what is important about them. State how these would or would not be significant to the nursing profession. Outline: Introduction – Identify the two different leadership theories or styles – State the rationale as to why these two theories or styles were chosen – What is the significance of these styles or theories, why are they important Discussion – Explain the similarities and differences between the two theories or styles, give examples – Discuss the advantages and disadvantages – State the conditions/environment that both of the theories or styles would work best. Summary – Summarize the findings from the discussion – States significance to the nursing profession.

Turn the brief into deliverables

  1. 01
A 2-3 page paper comparing and contrasting two different leadership styles or theories.
  2. 02
Introduction: both identified, the rationale for choosing them, and their significance.
  3. 03
Discussion: similarities and differences with examples, advantages and disadvantages, and the conditions or environment in which each works best.
  4. 04
Summary: the findings from the discussion, and their significance to the nursing profession.
  5. 05
Integration of nursing leadership concepts into the roles of the professional registered nurse.
03

Following the supplied outline, including the section people merge

01

Choose a comparable pair

Decide between two styles or two theories, and note why this pair is worth comparing.

02

Introduction

Identify both, give the rationale for the choice, and state why they matter.

03

Similarities

What the two share — assumptions about motivation, about the leader's source of authority, about how decisions travel.

04

Differences, with examples

Where they diverge, illustrated with situations from nursing practice.

05

Advantages and disadvantages

Properties of each approach, including what each costs.

06

Conditions and environment

The situations in which each works best — urgency, staff experience, task certainty, unit culture.

07

Summary and significance

The findings, then one claim about what this means for nursing practice.

04

Where nursing leadership competencies are set out

Recommended databases

  • AACN
  • American Nurses Association
  • NCBI Bookshelf
  • PubMed

Search sequence

  1. 1.
Decide whether you are comparing styles or theories before searching, since the literatures differ.
  2. 2.
Find one nursing-specific study for each approach so the examples are from the profession.
  3. 3.
Search for evidence on leadership and nurse retention or patient safety for the significance claim.
  4. 4.
Draft the conditions section separately from the advantages section so they do not merge on the page.
05

Review before submission

Common mistakes

  • Comparing one style with one theory, so the basis of comparison shifts mid-paper.
  • Merging the conditions section into advantages and disadvantages.
  • Giving a rationale that amounts to the two being opposites.
  • Writing a summary that restates the comparison instead of claiming significance for nursing.
  • Discussing leadership generally rather than in nursing settings, when the brief frames it professionally.
  • Using no examples, when the outline asks for them explicitly.

Submission checklist

  • The two selected are of the same kind, or the crossing is acknowledged and justified.
  • The introduction gives a rationale and a significance statement.
  • Similarities are discussed, not just differences.
  • Examples appear in the discussion, as the outline requires.
  • Advantages and disadvantages are separate from the conditions section.
  • The conditions section describes situations, not properties of the approach.
  • The summary makes a claim about significance to the nursing profession.
  • The paper is two to three pages and follows the outline's headings.
