How is Competency 1013.1.1 Task 1 actually evaluated?

Competency-based tasks are graded against an evaluation rubric aspect by aspect rather than holistically, which changes how you should write. Each of the six questions in the task will map to an aspect of the rubric, and an answer that is brilliant on four and silent on two will be returned rather than graded down. So the first structural decision is to answer the six questions visibly and separately, using the task's own wording as your organising headings if the submission format allows it. This is not a stylistic preference; competency evaluations are checked for the presence of each required element, and a beautifully integrated essay that buries one answer inside another is the commonest reason these tasks come back. Using the task's own words as headings also removes any ambiguity about which paragraph answers which aspect, which matters when the person evaluating your submission is checking a list rather than forming an impression.

The second thing to notice is that the task asks for observation, not for explanation of the theory. You are being assessed on whether you can catch your own automatic response as it happens and describe it, which is a considerably harder skill than defining fight, flight, freeze and appease. A submission that spends most of its length on the neuroscience of the stress response and two sentences on an actual incident has answered the wrong assignment. Keep the conceptual material to what is needed to make your observation intelligible, and spend the length on the incident itself. The module material exists to give you a vocabulary, not a subject. Two or three sentences of theory is usually enough, and anything beyond that is competing for space with the material only you can supply, which is the whole reason the task was set. Write the incident first and add the vocabulary afterwards.

Choosing the incident well makes everything downstream easier, and the instinct to pick something dramatic is wrong. A major crisis produces a response so overwhelming that you were not observing anything at the time, and the account becomes a reconstruction. Ordinary triggers work better precisely because they are disproportionate: an email from a manager, a driver cutting in, a colleague's tone in a meeting, an unexpected knock at the door. The disproportion is the evidence — the reaction was larger than the stimulus warranted, which is exactly what the module means by a miscued association. Choose an incident where you noticed the response, because the fifth question asks what you did differently after noticing, and if you never noticed there is no answer. Recurring triggers are also better because you can watch for the next occurrence deliberately, which turns the assignment into an actual observation rather than a memory exercise carried out under deadline.

The bodily description is where most submissions go thin and where the rubric is most likely to be specific. Answer the how did your body react question with the actual sequence: what changed first, where you felt it, how long it lasted, and what returned to baseline last. Heart rate, breathing, muscle tension in a named place, temperature in the hands or face, gut sensation, tunnel vision, a change in voice pitch. Note also the timing relative to the thought, because most people find the physical response preceded the interpretation, and reporting that is strong evidence of genuine observation rather than of recall reconstructed to fit the model. Writing the sequence rather than the list also makes the account credible, because reconstructed memories of stress tend to be undifferentiated and genuine observations almost always have an order to them. Note what you noticed last, too.

Separating emotion from bodily reaction is the distinction the task builds in by asking both questions, and running them together is a real error rather than a stylistic one. The body produced arousal; the emotion was the label you attached to it. Naming a specific emotion — irritation rather than anger, apprehension rather than fear, humiliation rather than upset — and noting whether the label arrived before or after the physical change shows you understood the point of the exercise. It also sets up the answer to the final question, because the practical value of noticing a bio-reaction is precisely the gap it opens between the arousal and the label, which is where a choice becomes possible. Getting this right also guards against the flattest version of the submission, in which every question is answered with the word stressed and the evaluator has no way to see that anything was observed.

The final question asks why awareness matters, and it should be answered from your own account rather than in general terms. Say what the reaction cost you in that specific instance: a reply sent that you had to walk back, a conversation avoided, a decision made while aroused that you would not have made an hour later. Then say what the noticing bought — even if it was only a pause. If you are in a health, education or service programme, connect it to practice, since a clinician's or teacher's unrecognised bio-reaction lands on someone else. Finally, respect the originality requirement: this task is checked against a similarity threshold and it is one of the few assignments where writing entirely from your own experience is not just permitted but the point. Writing from your own experience is also the easiest way to stay inside the limit, since the material has no source to match against.

Task 1: Observing Bio-Reactions Introduction: Bio-reactions (fight, flight, freeze, or appease) include quick responses to stimuli that are dangerous and fearful experiences. Bio-reactions help the brain reinforce certain pathways. Some pathways associate that past reaction with other similar events. This is one way to learn. The fear response may be associated with other non-fearful events. Because the brain is so good at making these associations, we aren’t even aware of the miscue. Competency 1013.1.1: Self-Discovery and Mindfulness Bio-reactions are automatic. In most cases they are not under your control, such as when you automatically close your eyes when something flies at your face. In other cases, you can have more control over your reaction. To be in control of these responses, the first step is to become aware of when you are experiencing a bio-reaction. To be aware of your bio-reactions, it may be helpful to ask yourself the following questions: • What caused the bio-reaction? • What was happening in the environment around you? • What emotions did you feel? • How did your body react? • What, if anything, did you do differently when you noticed you were having a bio-reaction? • Why is it important for you to be aware of your bio-reactions?
