Contemporary BSN and ADN nursing practice paper
A 1,000 word paper on nursing practice today: how practice has evolved and how that changed the scope and the approach to treating the individual, the differentiated competencies of associate and baccalaureate preparation, a patient care situation where their decision-making differs, the significance of evidence-based practice and how RN-BSN preparation supports it, and how nurses communicate with interdisciplinary teams.

Five bullets, evenly budgeted
Five bullets in a thousand words is two hundred words each, which is the single most useful fact about this assignment. It rules out a historical survey, an extended literature review, or a leisurely introduction. Every paragraph has to arrive somewhere. The most efficient structure gives each bullet its own short section with a heading, which also makes the marking straightforward and prevents the paper from spending four hundred words on the evolution bullet and one hundred on evidence-based practice. Write the third bullet, the patient care situation, first if you find it difficult, because a concrete scenario forces the abstractions in bullets two and four to become specific and gives the whole paper something to point at. Count the words in each section before submitting: the section that overruns is almost always the first. A paper that reaches the last bullet with forty words left has lost marks it had already earned. Budget on paper before drafting.
The first bullet asks two things and they are different. How nursing practice has changed over time is a historical claim; how that evolution changed the scope of practice and the approach to treating the individual is an analytical one. Keep the history compressed and let the analysis carry the section. The changes worth naming are those with consequences: the move of nursing education out of hospital training schools and into universities, the emergence of advanced practice roles with prescriptive authority, the shift of care out of hospitals into community and home settings, the arrival of the electronic record and its effect on documentation and surveillance, and the change from a task-centred model to one where the nurse coordinates a plan around a person. That last change is what the phrase approach to treating the individual is pointing at. Each of those changes can be stated in a sentence and consequenced in a second, which is the density this word count requires.
The second bullet, differentiated competencies, is the one where papers become defensive or vague. Both pathways lead to the same licence and the same examination, and the difference is not competence at the bedside. What differs is the content of the preparation: baccalaureate programmes add community and population health, leadership and management, research appraisal and evidence-based practice, health policy, and a broader liberal education base. Say that plainly and then say what follows: scope of practice is legally identical, but employers, magnet designation and progression to advanced roles differentiate by degree, and the competency difference shows up in work beyond direct care rather than within it. A paper that argues baccalaureate nurses are better nurses will read badly to any marker who trained through an associate programme, and it is not what the evidence supports either. Describe the difference and let the reader draw conclusions about it, which is also what the evidence on education level and outcomes actually supports.
The patient care situation is where the paper earns its distinction and it needs to be specific enough to be arguable. Choose a case where the difference is about the scope of the response rather than the correctness of it: a patient readmitted for the third time in two months, where both nurses manage the admission competently but one asks what in the discharge process keeps failing; a unit-level pattern of falls; a patient whose non-adherence turns out to be a transport problem. Describe what each nurse does and why, and make the difference one of framing — individual episode against system and population — rather than one of skill. That framing is exactly what the added baccalaureate content is for, so the example then evidences bullet two as well. Both nurses in your example should look competent, and the difference should be in what question each one asks next rather than in what either of them does wrong.
Bullets four and five are related and can be written to support each other. Evidence-based practice matters because it is the mechanism by which practice changes on the basis of something other than habit, and the RN-BSN curriculum supports it by teaching research appraisal, which is what lets a nurse read a study and judge whether it should change anything. Interdisciplinary communication then carries that judgement into a plan other professions act on, through structured handover tools, huddles, rounds and shared documentation. Say why this produces safer outcomes concretely — communication failure is the most consistently identified contributor to serious clinical incidents — rather than asserting that teamwork is important. Appraisal is the skill, not familiarity with the phrase, and saying so keeps this section from becoming an endorsement of a curriculum you are enrolled in. Name a specific tool if you can. Appraisal that changes nothing is an academic exercise rather than evidence-based practice.
On execution, follow APA, use the minimum of three references and check they are scholarly, and keep the plagiarism instruction in mind, which in practice means paraphrasing from sources you have read rather than assembling quotations. Use headings that echo the bullets. Do not write an introduction longer than fifty words; at this length it is pure cost. And take care to write about differentiated competencies rather than about which qualification is superior, because the assignment's word is differentiated and it is asking for a description of difference, not a ranking. Headings, tight sections and paraphrased sources will carry this paper further than elegant prose, given the length. Write for a marker checking five bullets against a rubric. Use headings that echo the five bullets so a marker checking a rubric can find each answer without reading for it, and keep the introduction to two sentences at most.

- 04A patient care situation showing how nursing care or decision-making differs between BSN and ADN nurses.
- 05A discussion of the significance of evidence-based practice and how RN-BSN preparation supports it.
- 06A discussion of communication and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams.
- 07APA formatting and a minimum of three references, with no plagiarism.

Search sequence
- 1.Search for studies on nurse education level and patient outcomes, and note their designs and limits.
- 2.Read a current description of baccalaureate curriculum content to describe competencies accurately.
- 3.Check the licensure and scope position in your jurisdiction so the legal claim is correct.
- 4.Search for evidence linking communication failure to clinical incidents.
- 5.Find one source on evidence-based practice implementation in nursing.

Review before submission
Common mistakes
- Spending a third of the paper on nursing history.
- Arguing that baccalaureate nurses are better rather than differently prepared.
- Ignoring that licence and legal scope of practice are identical.
- Choosing a case where one nurse simply performs better.
- Asserting that evidence-based practice matters without saying what it replaces.
- Claiming teamwork improves outcomes with no mechanism named.
- Writing a long introduction in a thousand-word paper.
Submission checklist
- Each bullet has its own section and roughly equal space.
- History is compressed; consequences for scope and approach carry the section.
- The move from task-centred to person-centred care is addressed explicitly.
- Competency differences are described as curriculum content, not ability.
- Identical licensure and legal scope are acknowledged.
- The patient care situation turns on framing rather than skill.
- Evidence-based practice is explained as what replaces habit.
- Research appraisal is named as the RN-BSN contribution.
- Communication failure is connected to incidents with a mechanism.
- Three or more scholarly references, APA formatting, paraphrased throughout.
