COUN 5223 advocacy for diverse clientele paper
A three to four page paper identifying a culturally diverse population within your community as the basis for the course project, describing advocacy processes for equitable and responsive policies, programmes and services, explaining how public policy has affected delivery and accessibility, setting out three strategies for working with that population, and listing at least three currently available community resources with an explanation of how you would promote client understanding and access, supported by a minimum of two professional references.

Choosing the population you will keep
This assignment chooses your course project, which changes how you should approach it. The population you name here is the one you will be writing about for the rest of the term, so the decision is worth more thought than the first unit's word count suggests. Two criteria matter. It has to be a population within your community, which rules out a group you know only from the literature and makes local data findable. And it has to be narrow enough that advocacy processes and community resources are specific rather than generic. Immigrants is too broad to advocate for; recently arrived Somali families in one metropolitan county is a population whose barriers you can name and whose services you can list. If you cannot find three real local resources for the group you have chosen, that is the assignment telling you to choose again, and it is far cheaper to learn that now.
Advocacy is the term the assignment leans on and it is used here in a specific professional sense, not as a synonym for caring about a group. The counselling profession distinguishes advocacy with a client from advocacy on their behalf, and distinguishes both from advocacy at the systems level, where the target is the policy or the institution rather than the individual case. The prompt asks about processes for policies, programmes and services that are equitable and responsive, and about institutional and social barriers that impede access, equity and success. Those are systems-level words. So the paper should describe what you would actually do at that level: who you would approach, what you would ask them to change, what evidence you would bring, and who else you would need alongside you. Naming an intended outcome is not a process. Say who has the authority to grant the change you are asking for, since that determines everything else about the process.
The public policy section asks specifically how local, state or national policies may have impacted delivery or accessibility of services to your population, and the word impacted permits both directions. Policy can create access, restrict it, or create it nominally while leaving it unreachable in practice, and the third case is usually the most interesting to write about. Eligibility rules that require documentation your population cannot produce, language access requirements that exist on paper but are not funded, reimbursement rules that make a service unviable in a rural county: these are concrete and they are the sort of thing local providers will tell you about if you ask. Choose two or three real policies rather than surveying the whole landscape, and say for each what it changed about who actually receives the service. Ask a local provider what the rule does in practice rather than reading only what it says.
The strategies section lists five levels, individual, couple, family, group and community, and asks for three strategies appropriate for working with and advocating for your population. Choose across levels rather than three variants of individual counselling, since the range is offered deliberately. Each strategy should say why it suits this population in particular. If your population's help-seeking runs through a religious community, a group strategy sited there is defensible and an office-based individual strategy may not be. If stigma is the dominant barrier, a family-level strategy may reach people an individual referral never would. Say what the strategy assumes about the population and what would make it fail, because a strategy with no stated conditions is an intention rather than a plan, and the difference is visible to a marker. Naming the conditions under which it would not work is what makes it a plan.
On execution, three requirements are easy to lose. The resources must be currently available, so verify each one exists and serves your area before listing it, and internet links with brief explanations are explicitly acceptable. The prompt also asks how you would promote client understanding of and access to those resources, which is a separate task from listing them, and it is where most papers stop one step short: knowing a resource exists is not the same as being able to use it, and the gap is usually language, transport, cost, hours or trust. Use the supplied assignment template, keep to three or four pages, meet the minimum of two professional references from the library rather than from general websites, and use current APA throughout. The resources may be links; the references supporting your approaches may not. Verify each link on the day you submit, because service directories go stale faster than anything else in the paper.
Likely learning objectives
Inferred from the brief — check these against your own rubric.
- 01Select a population narrow enough for specific advocacy and local resources.
- 02Distinguish systems-level advocacy from advocacy with an individual client.
- 03Describe advocacy as a process with actors, asks and evidence.
- 04Analyse policy impact including access that exists only nominally.
- 05Choose strategies across individual, family, group and community levels.
- 06Separate listing a resource from enabling a client to use it.

I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. Your assignments in weeks 4 and 5 require early planning as you would need to present a teaching plan and interview a community health provider. I advise you look at the requirements for these assignments at the beginning of the course and plan accordingly. I have posted the YouTube link that explains all the class assignments in detail. It is required that you watch this 32-minute video as the assignments from week 3 through 5 require that you follow the instructions to the letter to succeed. Failure to complete these assignments according to instructions might lead to a zero. After watching the video, please schedule a one-on-one with me to discuss your topic for your project by the second week of class. Use this link to schedule a 15-minute session. Please, call me at the time of your appointment on my number. Please note that I will NOT call you. Please, be advised I do NOT accept any assignments by email. If you have any issues that would prevent you from getting your assignments to me by the deadline, please inform me to request a possible extension. Note that working fulltime or overtime is no excuse for late assignments. There is a 5%-point deduction for every day your assignment is late. This only applies to approved extensions. Late assignments will not be accepted. If you think you would be needing accommodations due to any reasons, please contact the appropriate department to request accommodations. Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements. Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week. I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
