Part II has three sub-questions and the third is the one that gets dropped: how the patient's diet interacts with the common medications for their disease. That is where the paper stops being a nutrition essay.

One patient profile carries all three parts

Choose the patient profile first and then keep every later section tied to that one person, because the paper is graded on continuity rather than on breadth. Part I analyses the diet, which means working from what the profile actually records rather than from general dietary advice: total intake against requirement, macronutrient distribution, sodium, added sugar, fibre, and whichever nutrient matters for this patient's condition. Follow the sample paper's list structure for calculations, as the instructions specify, because a calculation section written as prose is harder to mark and the requirement is explicit. Part II then has three separate demands and they must each be answered. Anatomy: what the diet is doing to the organ systems involved. Pathophysiology: how it accelerates or slows the disease process specifically, which means naming the mechanism rather than asserting that a poor diet worsens the condition. Those two answers should read differently: one is about structure and the other is about trajectory.

The third demand in Part II is the one papers skip — the common medications associated with the disease and how this diet interacts with them. That is a real clinical question with concrete answers: vitamin K intake against warfarin, potassium against ACE inhibitors or potassium-sparing diuretics, grapefruit against statins and several other drug classes, carbohydrate distribution against insulin timing, calcium and iron against levothyroxine absorption. Name the drug class, the dietary component and the direction of the effect. Part III then asks for SMART goals, and the acronym is the rubric: each goal specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound, written for the patient rather than about them. 'Reduce sodium' is not a goal; 'keep sodium under 2,000 mg a day, checked against labels, for the next four weeks' is. Two peer-reviewed sources minimum, integrated into the paragraphs rather than appended at the end as a formality.

The purpose of this assignment is to synthesize and apply the knowledge you gained in class into a well-written research paper. For this assignment, you will conduct research and write a paper containing three parts: Part I: Analyze diet Part II: Evaluate how the patient’s diet affects: The person’s health (anatomy) The progression of the illness (pathophysiology) Common medications associated with the disease Part III: Create patient SMART goals and an evidence-based plan of care (patient education) Begin by viewing the patient profiles and assignment details Choose one patient profile and use it to complete Parts I–III of the assignment. In addition to the assignment specifics, your paper should: Be 4.5 pages, not including the title and reference pages. Source(s) should be integrated into the paragraphs. Use in-text citations pointing to evidence in the literature and supporting your ideas. Incorporate a minimum of two peer-reviewed sources into your paper. Use current APA format to style your paper and to cite your sources. Follow the list structure of the sample paper for the section on calculations. You can download a sample paper in the Worksheets, Forms, and Templates area at left. Include a title page and a reference page listing the sources you used. Be sure to plan enough time for proofreading and editing. Signature Assignment Details Part I The Diet Include the following in Part I: • Criterion 1: Determine if the person’s diet is deficient or in excess of CHO, PRO, and fat and explain why. • Criterion 2: Explain in detail how the person’s diet meets or does not meet the RDA for five or more micronutrients. Part II Disease and Nutrition Include the following in Part II: • Criterion 1: Explain how the person’s diet would affect the patient’s disease symptoms and progression. Provide a minimum of three examples of how specific foods affect the disease pathophysiology. Provide examples of foods the person should avoid, and those he/she should consume. • Criterion 2: Explain how food interacts with the medications this patient takes. What are the nutrient-related side effects of the medication? What are the nutrient restrictions and recommendations for the medications? o Example: Iron supplements cause constipation, so people are advised to increase fiber foods; however, if a person is taking fiber with iron, the fiber will reduce the absorption of the iron thus decreasing the effectiveness of the iron. Part III Patient Education Include the following in part III: • Criterion 1: Calculate the following for the patient: BMI, BMR, CHO, PRO, and fat needs and any other relevant calculations that will help you develop a nutritional plan for your patient. • Criterion 2: Develop an evidence-based nutritional education plan with three SMART goals for your patient. Provide specific nursing strategies and examples for the patient, and consider all aspects of the patient’s lifestyle.

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes. Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages. Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor. The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.
