Discovering Sociology Week 1 forum: two question options
Choose one of two questions: describe the three major sociological perspectives and argue which gives the more accurate view of the social world, or explain the sociological imagination, relate it to Mills's private troubles and public issues, and give an example that is both.

Two questions, and the second one is easier to do well
Question one asks you to describe structural functionalism, conflict theory and symbolic interactionism and then argue which is more accurate, and the argument is where the marks sit. Describe each by what it treats as the unit of analysis and what it thinks holds society together: functionalism looks at institutions and what they contribute to stability; conflict theory looks at groups competing over scarce resources and asks who benefits; interactionism works at the level of face-to-face meaning-making. Then commit. Saying that all three are useful in different contexts is the answer everybody gives, and it can still earn marks if you go on to say which one you would reach for first and why — but a defended choice is stronger, and choosing the macro or micro level and arguing that the other one misses something specific gives the post an actual thesis to defend against the classmates who will reply to it.
Question two is the better choice if you want depth in a short post, because it supplies its own structure. The sociological imagination is Mills's term for the capacity to see the link between personal biography and historical social structure, and it turns on a distinction the question names: a private trouble is an individual's problem within their immediate setting, a public issue is a matter that transcends the individual and belongs to the structure of the society. The example you choose has to be genuinely both, so pick something where the scale makes the difference visible: one person losing a job is a trouble, an unemployment rate is an issue; one family unable to afford insulin is a trouble, a national pricing structure is an issue. The bracketed hint names what the instructor wants next: how media and culture link the two. Formatted citations are not required here, so put the effort into the example.
