Dispositional vs evolutionary personality theories

The two families answer different questions — one describes what traits people have, the other explains why the species has traits at all — and confusing description with explanation is the error the grader is watching for.

01

A newspaper article, not an essay — and why that matters

The distinction the article turns on is between description and explanation. Dispositional theories, running from Allport through Cattell to the Big Five, ask what stable characteristics people carry across situations and how those characteristics can be measured; they are fundamentally taxonomic. Evolutionary and biological theories ask a different question — why a species should have heritable variation in temperament at all — and answer it with selection pressures, heritability estimates from twin studies, and neurobiological substrates such as reactivity in approach and avoidance systems. A student who writes that dispositional theory says people are extraverted and evolutionary theory says extraversion is inherited has not distinguished anything; both sentences are about extraversion. The distinction is what each account treats as the thing to be explained. Say that plainly early, because everything else in the article depends on it holding, and a reader who misses it will read your whole comparison as a list of overlapping claims.

Then notice the format instruction, because it contains a real tension. You are writing a newspaper informational article, which means a general reader with no psychology background, short paragraphs, and no assumed vocabulary — but you must also format in APA and cite two to three sources. Resolve it by writing genuinely accessible prose and keeping the citations in place rather than by writing an essay and calling it an article. Define heritability the first time you use it, since almost every reader will take it to mean something about individuals rather than about variance in a population. On the Big Five, treat it as the measurement instrument that grew out of the dispositional tradition: five broad factors recovered repeatedly from ratings, used in selection, clinical work and research, with known limits around self-report and cross-cultural replication. That last point is the natural place for your disadvantages section to bite.

Likely learning objectives

Inferred from the brief — check these against your own rubric.

  • 01
Separate a descriptive taxonomy of traits from a causal account of why traits exist.
  • 02
Evaluate what each theoretical family can and cannot explain about behaviour.
  • 03
Explain the Big Five as a measurement instrument with known limits.
  • 04
Write technical psychology for a general readership without losing accuracy.

Dispositional and evolutionary theories: For a newspaper, write a 1,000- to 1,250-word informational article in which you do the following: Distinguish between dispositional and evolutionary or biological personality theories. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of dispositional, evolutionary, or biological personality theories as they apply to behavior. Discuss the Big Five personality tests and how they are used in the study of personality. Dispositional and evolutionary theories are required. Include at least two to three sources. Format your article in accordance with APA guidelines.
02

Turn the brief into deliverables

  1. 01
A 1,000-1,250 word informational article in newspaper register.
  2. 02
An explicit distinction between dispositional and evolutionary or biological theories.
  3. 03
Advantages and disadvantages of each, tied to behaviour rather than to theory-building.
  4. 04
A section on the Big Five and how the tests are actually used.
  5. 05
Two to three sources cited in APA format.
03

Distinguish, weigh, then land the Big Five

01

The question each family is answering

Establish description versus explanation as the organising distinction.

02

What dispositional theory buys and costs

Show predictive usefulness against its silence on origins and situational variance.

03

What evolutionary and biological accounts buy and cost

Weigh heritability and neurobiological evidence against post hoc adaptive storytelling.

04

The Big Five in practice

Explain the five factors, how the instruments are administered, and where they are used.

04

Sources that separate trait description from causal claim

Recommended databases

  • PsycINFO
  • PubMed
  • Annual Review of Psychology
  • Noba Project for accessible summaries

Search sequence

  1. 1.
Read one overview of trait structure before deciding how to frame the Big Five.
  2. 2.
Search twin study AND personality heritability to get a defensible number rather than a claim.
  3. 3.
Look for a cross-cultural replication paper, which supplies your strongest disadvantage.
  4. 4.
Check one evolutionary psychology critique so the weighing is genuine rather than decorative.
05

Reference shortlist

These are authoritative starting points, not a ready-made bibliography. A qualified reviewer must confirm that each source fits the assignment and supports the claim beside which it is cited.

Nothing here is cleared for citation until you have read it.

  2. 02

    Personality Assessment | Noba

    Noba Project · 2024

How trait instruments are built, administered and validated, which is what the 'how they are used' requirement is asking about.

Review before submission

Common mistakes

  • Contrasting the two families by topic rather than by what each treats as needing explanation.
  • Using heritability as though it described an individual rather than variance in a population.
  • Presenting the Big Five as a theory of personality rather than as a measurement model.
  • Writing an academic essay and relabelling it an article.
  • Listing advantages and disadvantages that apply to any theory rather than to these ones.

Submission checklist

  • Could a reader with no psychology state the difference after one read?
  • Is heritability defined the first time it appears?
  • Are the disadvantages specific to dispositional or evolutionary accounts?
  • Is the Big Five presented with its measurement limits, not just its five factors?
  • Is the word count inside 1,000-1,250 and are the sources in APA?
