Inductive and Deductive Reasoning Discussion Guide
Two arguments, two different standards of evaluation. Calling an inductive argument invalid is the single fastest way to show you have not understood the distinction.

Find real arguments, then evaluate them by the right standard
The distinction being tested is about what an argument claims, not about whether it moves from general to specific — that textbook shorthand is wrong often enough to be a trap. A deductive argument claims that its conclusion follows necessarily: if the premises are true, the conclusion cannot be false. An inductive argument claims only that its premises make the conclusion probable. Once you have the claim right, the evaluation vocabulary follows and it is different for each. Deductive arguments are valid or invalid, and a valid argument with true premises is sound. Inductive arguments are strong or weak, and a strong argument with true premises is cogent. Calling an inductive argument invalid, or asking whether a deductive argument is strong, is the error the assignment exists to catch, and it is visible in the first sentence of a post. Write the two vocabularies out at the top of your notes and check every sentence against them.
The prompt says find and post examples, so use real ones rather than the textbook's Socrates. Advertising, editorials, political speeches and public health messaging are full of arguments and they repay analysis because their premises are contestable. Set each one out in standard form before evaluating it — premises numbered, conclusion last — because putting an argument into standard form is where most of the thinking happens and where unstated premises become visible. Then evaluate. For the deductive example, test validity by asking whether you can imagine the premises true and the conclusion false; if you can, it is invalid regardless of how reasonable it sounds. For the inductive one, ask about sample size, representativeness and whether counter-evidence was considered, since those are what strength actually depends on. Keep truth and validity separate throughout: an argument can be perfectly valid and completely false. Say which unstated premise you had to add to make each argument work.
