DNP 830 Topic 6 DQ 1: SQUIRE audit of your draft

This asks what you can improve, which means the post has to contain a finding about your own draft. A general appreciation of the guideline is not an audit.

01

Audit your own draft against a checklist you did not write

The verb is compare and the object is your manuscript thus far, so this post should read like an audit report rather than an essay. Take the guideline's sections in order and say what your draft currently has against each. The useful output is a small number of specific gaps with the fix named, not a survey of the whole standard. Two or three genuine findings beat a paragraph confirming that your paper has an introduction and a methods section. Where your draft is genuinely strong, say so briefly and move on; the marks here are for identifying what is missing, and a post that finds nothing wrong with its own work is usually reporting on a checklist it did not open. It also helps to audit in the order the guideline lists rather than the order your draft happens to be in, since the items you skip are reliably the ones your draft has no section for.

Certain items catch almost everyone and are worth checking first. The rationale item asks for the reasoning or theory that made you expect the intervention to work, and many drafts have a literature review where the rationale should be — a summary of what others found is not a mechanism. The context item asks for enough local detail that a reader elsewhere can judge whether your results would transfer, and drafts habitually under-describe the setting because it is obvious to the author. The item on how the intervention changed during implementation is almost always missing, because adaptations feel like deviations rather than findings. The measures item wants a definition and a reliability, not just a name. Pick the two that bite hardest on your draft, quote what you currently have, and say what you will replace it with. Quote your current wording when you report a gap, because a gap described abstractly tends to get revised into another abstraction.

Likely learning objectives

Inferred from the brief — check these against your own rubric.

  • 01
Audit a draft against an external standard item by item.
  • 02
Distinguish a rationale from a literature review.
  • 03
Recognise under-described context as a transferability problem.
  • 04
Treat intervention adaptations as reportable findings.

I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. Your assignments in weeks 4 and 5 require early planning as you would need to present a teaching plan and interview a community health provider. I advise you look at the requirements for these assignments at the beginning of the course and plan accordingly. I have posted the YouTube link that explains all the class assignments in detail. It is required that you watch this 32-minute video as the assignments from week 3 through 5 require that you follow the instructions to the letter to succeed. Failure to complete these assignments according to instructions might lead to a zero. After watching the video, please schedule a one-on-one with me to discuss your topic for your project by the second week of class. Use this link to schedule a 15-minute session. Please, be advised I do NOT accept any assignments by email. If you are having technical issues with uploading an assignment, contact the technical department and inform me of the issue. If you have any issues that would prevent you from getting your assignments to me by the deadline, please inform me to request a possible extension. Note that working fulltime or overtime is no excuse for late assignments. There is a 5%-point deduction for every day your assignment is late. This only applies to approved extensions. Late assignments will not be accepted. If you think you would be needing accommodations due to any reasons, please contact the appropriate department to request accommodations. Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements. Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week. I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course! 02

Turn the brief into deliverables

  1. 01
Two or three specific gaps identified in your own draft.
  2. 02
The guideline item each gap corresponds to.
  3. 03
What you currently have, quoted or summarised.
  4. 04
The concrete change you will make.
03

Compare item by item, then prioritise the gaps

01

How you audited

State which items you checked and against what part of the draft.

02

Gap one, with the current text

Name the first shortfall and show what the draft currently says.

03

Gap two, with the current text

Name a second shortfall against a different item.

04

What you will change

Set out the specific revisions and their order.

04

Reading the guideline's worked examples

Recommended databases

  • The SQUIRE 2.0 statement
  • PubMed Central
  • BMJ Quality & Safety
  • Your own manuscript draft

Search sequence

  1. 1.
Read the explanation-and-elaboration paper for the items you intend to audit.
  2. 2.
Find a published report that handles the rationale item well and note how.
  3. 3.
Check your draft's context section against what a distant reader would need.
  4. 4.
List every adaptation made during implementation before deciding it has none.
05

Reference shortlist

These are authoritative starting points, not a ready-made bibliography. A qualified reviewer must confirm that each source fits the assignment and supports the claim beside which it is cited.

Nothing here is cleared for citation until you have read it.

  1. 01

Explanation and elaboration of the SQUIRE (Standards for Quality Improvement Reporting Excellence) Guidelines, V.2.0: examples of SQUIRE elements

    BMJ Quality & Safety · 2016

The item-by-item elaboration of SQUIRE 2.0 with worked examples, which is what makes an audit possible rather than impressionistic.

  2. 02

Quality Improvement Methods (LEAN, PDSA, SIX SIGMA)

    StatPearls, NCBI Bookshelf · 2024

Sets out the improvement methods whose mechanism the rationale item is asking you to articulate.

  3. 03

Implementation strategies for large scale quality improvement initiatives in primary care settings: a qualitative assessment

    BMC Primary Care · 2023

An implementation study that reports context and adaptation explicitly, which is the standard the two hardest items are asking for.

  4. 04

Section 4: Ways To Approach the Quality Improvement Process

Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality · 2024

A practical account of running an improvement process, useful for recognising which of your own steps were adaptations worth reporting.

06

Review before submission

Common mistakes

  • Surveying the guideline instead of auditing the draft.
  • Reporting no gaps at all.
  • Presenting a literature review as the project's rationale.
  • Omitting adaptations because they feel like failures rather than data.

Submission checklist

  • Does the post contain findings about your own text?
  • Is each gap tied to a named guideline item?
  • Have you said what you will actually change?
  • Did you check the rationale and context items specifically?
