Healthy People disease or caregiver strain DQ guide

Respond to one of two questions: review Healthy People global health initiatives, choose one disease process and discuss it, the Healthy People goal and the CDC's role in meeting it; or search the library for caregiver role strain and identify the most important causal factor and how to prevent it.

Which of the two questions should you take?

The instruction says respond to one of the following, so answering both halves the depth of each and gains nothing. Choose deliberately, because the two questions test different things. The first is a systems question — it asks you to connect a condition, a national objective and a federal agency's function, so it rewards precision about who does what. The second is a nursing-practice question that turns on a judgement — what is the most important factor — and rewards an argument. If you are more comfortable defending a position, take the caregiver question; if you would rather trace how a national goal reaches a patient, take the first. The objectives are published and citable, so option one's evidence is easy to anchor; option two sends you to the library, which is more work but produces a post nobody else can have written the same way. Name your choice in the opening line either way.

The Healthy People option has three parts and the middle one is where posts go thin. Discussing the disease process means the pathophysiology and its course, not just prevalence — what goes wrong, how it progresses, and what determines outcome, because the goal and the intervention only make sense against that. The Healthy People goal should be quoted as an objective with its target and baseline rather than paraphrased as a general aspiration; these objectives are numbered and measurable, and using one properly is what distinguishes this from a general health essay. Then be exact about the CDC's role, which is largely surveillance, laboratory and epidemiological capacity, guideline development, funding and technical assistance to states, and public communication — it does not deliver most clinical care, and saying so accurately is a mark of understanding rather than a limitation of the answer.

The caregiver question names a superlative, so the post has to make a choice and defend it. The documented contributors are well characterised: the intensity and duration of care, the care recipient's behavioural and cognitive symptoms rather than physical dependency alone, the caregiver's own health and competing employment, lack of respite, lack of preparation and skill, and social isolation. A strong post picks one — many would argue behavioural symptoms combined with round-the-clock demand — and says why it outweighs the others, then answers the prevention half with interventions matched to that factor rather than with generic advice to take care of yourself. Respite, skills training, structured assessment of the caregiver as a client in their own right, and referral to support services are all documentable, and the assessment point is the one nurses control most directly, since a caregiver who is never assessed is never referred either.

Likely learning objectives

Inferred from the brief — check these against your own rubric.

  • 01
Choose one question rather than covering both shallowly.
  • 02
Describe a disease process by mechanism and course, not by prevalence alone.
  • 03
Quote a Healthy People objective with its target and baseline.
  • 04
State the CDC's actual functions rather than treating it as a care provider.
  • 05
Defend a single most important factor in the caregiver question.

NSG 4055 Week 3 DQ 1 Discussion Question Respond to one of the following questions: Review Healthy People 2020 Global Health Initiatives.Choose one disease process and discuss the disease process, the goal of Healthy People 2020, and how the CDC plays a role in meeting the goal. Search the South University Online Library for caregiver role strain. What is the most important factor that causes caregiver role strain? What can be done to prevent it?
Course-wide instructions that accompany this question

ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CLASS Discussion Questions (DQ) Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, include a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words. Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source. One or two sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words. I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses. Weekly Participation Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately. In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies. Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work). Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week. APA Format and Writing Quality Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required). Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation. NSG 4055 Week 3 DQ 1 I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition. Use of Direct Quotes I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly. As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content. It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source. LopesWrite Policy For assignments that need to be submitted to LopesWrite, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me. Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes. Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own? Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score. Late Policy The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies. Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances. If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect. I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension. As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading. Communication Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me: Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class. Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.

02

Turn the brief into deliverables

  1. 01
A response to one of the two questions, clearly identified.
  2. 02
For option one: the disease process, the Healthy People goal, and the CDC's role.
  3. 03
For option two: the most important causal factor and how to prevent it.
  4. 04
Library-sourced evidence, as the second option specifies.
03

What is the CDC's role, precisely?

01

Option one: the disease process

Explain what goes wrong, how it progresses, and what determines outcome, so the national goal has something to attach to.

02

Option one: the objective and the CDC

Quote the numbered objective with its target and baseline, then set out surveillance, guideline development, funding to states, and public communication as the agency's contribution.

03

Option two: the chosen factor

Select one contributor — intensity and duration, behavioural and cognitive symptoms, caregiver health, competing employment, absent respite, lack of preparation, isolation — and argue why it outweighs the rest.

04

Option two: prevention

Match interventions to the chosen factor: respite, skills training, structured caregiver assessment, and referral to support services.

04

Where are the objectives and the caregiver evidence?

Recommended databases

  • Healthy People 2030
  • MedlinePlus
  • NCBI Bookshelf and the university library

Search sequence

  1. 1.
Decide which question you are answering before reading anything.
  2. 2.
For option one, find the numbered objective and record its target and baseline verbatim.
  3. 3.
Check what the agency itself says it does, rather than assuming.
  4. 4.
For option two, search the library for caregiver strain determinants and note which are most strongly supported.
05

    Healthy People 2030

Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion · 2024

The numbered, measurable objectives with baselines and targets that option one has to quote rather than paraphrase.

  2. 02

Family Caregiving Roles and Impacts - Families Caring for an Aging America

National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, NCBI Bookshelf · 2016

The documented determinants of caregiver strain, which the most-important-factor argument must be built from.

  3. 03

    Caregivers

MedlinePlus, U.S. National Library of Medicine · 2024

The support and respite interventions that the prevention half of option two should draw on.

06

Review before submission

Common mistakes

  • Answering both questions and doing neither properly.
  • Describing a condition by prevalence without the disease process.
  • Paraphrasing a Healthy People objective instead of citing it with its target.
  • Attributing clinical service delivery to the CDC.
  • Listing caregiver strain factors without choosing one as most important.
  • Answering the prevention half with generic self-care advice.

Submission checklist

  • One question chosen and named at the top.
  • Disease process described by mechanism and course, if option one.
  • Objective quoted with target and baseline, if option one.
  • CDC functions stated accurately: surveillance, guidance, funding, communication.
  • A single factor chosen and defended, if option two.
  • Prevention measures matched to the chosen factor.
