Ruling out Nightingale is the instruction that shapes the answer
There are two things to write here and they are not the same length. The Nightingale exclusion is the instruction that decides the first half, and it is doing more than preventing repetition — she is the answer everyone reaches for, so ruling her out is a test of whether you can find a second case at all. Choosing one you can actually describe mechanically, rather than name, is what separates the answers. Naming a case you cannot explain is worse than choosing a smaller one you can, because the question is about statistical application rather than about medical history, and the marks follow the method.
Good alternatives are not hard once you look past the obvious. John Snow's Broad Street cholera mapping established that spatial distribution of cases could identify a source before the pathogen was known. Semmelweis compared mortality between two obstetric clinics and found handwashing mattered, decades before germ theory explained why. The Framingham Heart Study produced the concept of a cardiovascular risk factor, which is now so embedded that it is hard to remember it had to be discovered. Doll and Hill's work linked smoking to lung cancer through a cohort design. Each of these has the property the question wants: a statistical method producing a conclusion that changed practice. Say what was counted, what the comparison was, and what changed as a result — three sentences, and the example is done properly.
The paper's first requirement names four things and expects four answers — quality, safety, health promotion and leadership — and they are genuinely different applications rather than four words for the same one. Quality uses statistics to detect variation and to know whether a change improved anything. Safety uses them to find rare events in large denominators, where the counting problem is that near misses go unreported. Health promotion uses them to target populations and to measure a programme's effect. Leadership uses them to allocate resources and to argue for them. A paragraph covering all four generically has covered none of them. The quickest test is whether your four sentences could be swapped between headings without anyone noticing; if they could, they describe statistics in general rather than four applications of it, which is what the requirement lists.
The second requirement is the one that cannot be researched, and it is where the marks differentiate. It asks about **your** organisation or specialty area: how you obtain statistical data, how it is used day to day, and how you apply it in decision making. That means naming actual sources — your unit's dashboard, an incident reporting system, the quality department's monthly pack, a registry you submit to — and one real decision that turned on a number. Generic statements about how nurses use data are the default answer and are indistinguishable across a cohort. A single concrete example of a staffing, escalation or protocol decision made on evidence is worth more than a paragraph of description. It is also the only part of this paper a marker can be sure you did not find in a database, which is precisely why it discriminates.
Two small compliance points that are stated and checkable. Three peer-reviewed, scholarly or professional references are required — note that professional sources are permitted here, which is looser than a strict peer-review rule, so a professional body's report can count. And an abstract is explicitly **not** required, which is worth reading twice because adding one is a common reflex on an APA paper and it consumes words from a budget that is already tight for a two-part requirement.
