Influences how, exactly — name the pathway
Answer the influence question with a pathway rather than a claim, because data does not change practice on its own. The route runs roughly: surveillance detects a pattern; analytic study establishes whether an association is real and how strong; evidence is synthesised across studies; a guideline body converts that into a recommendation; and local practice changes when the recommendation reaches an order set, a protocol or a reimbursement rule. Naming those stages lets you say which one your example is at, and it prevents the commonest error in this post, which is treating a striking surveillance figure as though it settled a practice question. Descriptive data tells you where and in whom something is happening; it does not tell you what to do about it. Say which stage your own example sits at before you describe it, because a reader can then judge whether your data claim is proportionate. Most posts overstate by one stage without noticing they have done it.
Choose an example where the pathway is documented, since the assignment asks for one. The association between smoking and lung cancer moved from case-control studies through the Surgeon General's report into clinical screening and cessation practice, and the chain is unusually well recorded. Then answer the data question specifically. To justify a practice change you need more than an association: a temporal sequence showing exposure preceded outcome, a magnitude large enough to matter clinically, consistency across settings and populations, control for the obvious confounders, and evidence that the proposed change actually alters the outcome rather than merely the risk factor. Add the local layer, because practice is local: a national recommendation still needs baseline data from your own population to show the problem exists here and to measure whether the change worked. Name the surveillance system your baseline would come from, since a plan that says local data without saying which dataset has not answered the question.
