How should 1,150 words cover six questions?

Six questions in about 1,150 words is roughly one hundred and ninety words each, which is the constraint that should shape every decision you make. There is no room for a general introduction about how fascinating memory is, and no room to explain a concept twice. Answer the questions in the order given, use each question as a section, and let the essay's argument be the thread running through them: memory is a physical change in circuits, which is why it can be improved, why it can fail in specific ways, and why it can be wrong without anyone lying. Stating that thread in two sentences at the start gives the marker a thesis and gives you a criterion for cutting material, which you will need. Anything that does not serve one of the six questions comes out, however interesting it is, and that includes the history of memory research.

The first question is the one most often answered loosely. Working memory and long-term memory differ in capacity, in duration, in the mechanism that holds them and in where they sit anatomically — sustained prefrontal activity for the former, structural and synaptic change with hippocampal involvement for the latter. The similarity worth naming is that both are constructive and both are limited, and that working memory is where long-term contents get manipulated when retrieved. For the second question, the mechanism you need is long-term potentiation: repeated activation strengthens synapses, protein synthesis stabilises the change, and consolidation, including during sleep, moves representations toward cortical storage. Maintenance is the part students omit — memories are not stored and left alone, they are reconsolidated on retrieval, which is exactly what makes the fourth question about accuracy answerable rather than a matter of opinion. Name reconsolidation explicitly, because it is the hinge the second half of the essay turns on.

Questions three and four reward the same insight from two directions. Forgetting is adaptive because generalisation requires discarding detail, because outdated information would otherwise compete with current information, and because emotionally intrusive memories carry a cost — which links directly to the post-traumatic stress example in question five. Accuracy then follows from reconsolidation: because retrieval is reconstruction, memories can be altered by the act of remembering, by later information and by the questions we are asked, so the honest answer to are our memories accurate is no, systematically and predictably so. Question six wants both age and environment — developmental change in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, decline in older age, and environmental factors such as sleep, stress, enrichment and substance use. Keep every mechanism claim cited, since four scholarly sources is a floor rather than a target, and a neuroscience essay that names structures and processes without attribution reads as summarised from memory rather than researched.
