Identity statuses, Holland's types and the Big Five

Three frameworks, and half the questions are about you
Three frameworks, each followed by a question about your own life, so treat each as a pair and get the theory right before the self-application. Marcia's four identity statuses are defined by two variables crossed, exploration and commitment, and stating them that way is what separates a correct answer from a memorised list. Identity diffusion is neither explored nor committed; foreclosure is committed without having explored, typically by adopting a parent's plan; moratorium is exploring without having committed; achievement is committed after exploring. Most students recognise moratorium or foreclosure in their own adolescence, and the honest answer is often that you moved between them. Holland's six types — realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising and conventional — need a description and a vocational example each, and the underlying claim is congruence: satisfaction and persistence follow from fit between person and environment, which is why the personal question that follows is not decoration.
The marriage questions ask for similarities as well as differences, which is easy to skip. Traditional and egalitarian marriages both involve commitment, shared economic life and role expectations; the difference is how roles are allocated — by gender in the first, by negotiation, preference or capacity in the second — and how decisions and unpaid labour are divided. Real marriages usually sit between the two rather than at either pole, and saying so is more accurate than picking a type. Then the Big Five: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism, each needing the characteristics of both high and low scorers, since the prompt asks for both ends. Note that these are dimensions rather than categories and that low agreeableness or low openness are not defects. For every personal question, answer briefly and specifically — a sentence with a concrete instance beats a paragraph of self-description.

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes. Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages. Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor. The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.
