01

The competencies are the outline

This proposal supplies its own structure, because the competency bullets are the scoring criteria written out. Read them as section headings rather than as context: analyse the factors contributing to a problematic health care issue, explain the need for interprofessional collaboration in specific instances, assess the effectiveness of a particular leadership approach, develop a collaborative plan, determine the leader's role in implementing it, and determine how the practitioner-scholar model might be applied. A proposal that follows that order will hit every criterion; one organised by the writer's own logic usually drops two of them. Note also the recurring phrase in specific instances. The assessment wants the general case grounded in a particular problem in a particular setting, so choose one concrete safety or quality issue early — medication reconciliation failures at discharge, handoff communication in a specific unit, pressure injury rates — and keep every section inside it.

Two bullets deserve more care than they usually get. Assess the effectiveness of a particular leadership approach is an evaluation, not a description: pick one approach — transformational, servant, situational — and say what evidence there is that it does or does not build and maintain collaborative relationships, including where it falls short. Naming a style and praising it is not assessment. The practitioner-scholar bullet is the one most often skipped entirely, and it is asking something specific: how does a practitioner who also engages with scholarship approach this problem differently from one who does not? The answer is about bringing evidence into practice decisions, generating and evaluating local data rather than only consuming published work, and being the person on the team who asks what the evidence actually shows. Say how that role would operate inside the specific team you are proposing in this particular setting.

Review before submission

Common mistakes

  • Organising the proposal by personal logic and missing two of the competency criteria.
  • Writing about interprofessional collaboration generally with no specific instance.
  • Describing a leadership style instead of assessing its effectiveness.
  • Omitting the practitioner-scholar bullet entirely.
  • Proposing a team without saying which professions are on it and why.
  • Ending at the plan without addressing implementation.

Submission checklist

  • Every competency bullet has a corresponding section.
  • One specific safety or quality issue runs through the whole proposal.
  • The leadership approach is assessed with evidence, including its limits.
  • The collaborative plan names the professions involved.
  • The leader's implementation role is addressed separately from the plan.
  • The practitioner-scholar model is applied to this issue, not defined in general.
