What is this IOM Future of Nursing paper actually asking for?

Five numbered questions and a 750-1,000 word ceiling is the constraint that decides this paper before you write a sentence. Divided evenly, each question gets between 150 and 200 words, which is roughly two paragraphs: enough for a claim, its evidence and its significance, and not enough for a history of the report. Papers that fail this assignment usually fail it on budget rather than on understanding. Question one swells to six hundred words summarising the Institute of Medicine's findings, and questions four and five then arrive as single sentences with almost nothing in them to grade. Draft the five answers as five separate blocks with a word count attached to each, and write the introduction last. The rubric carries a separate row for the thesis, so that introduction has to state a position about the report's influence rather than announce that the paper will discuss it.

The first question asks for the four messages, and the report contains both four key messages and eight recommendations. Confusing the two is the commonest error on this assignment, because the recommendations are more concrete and easier to find. The four messages are that nurses should practise to the full extent of their education and training; that nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system promoting seamless academic progression; that nurses should be full partners with physicians and other health professionals in redesigning health care; and that effective workforce planning and policy making require better data collection and an improved information infrastructure. Summarise each in your own words, then answer the second half of the question, which is why each one matters to practice. The rubric grades that explanation of significance separately from the summary itself, so a list alone scores half the row.

Question two contains two demands and a third clause, and most papers answer only the first. The report's influence on nursing education is not the same as its influence on nursing leadership, and the benefits and opportunities for baccalaureate-prepared nurses are a third item again. The most useful specific you can bring here is the eighty per cent target: the report called for eighty per cent of registered nurses to hold a baccalaureate degree by 2020, and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing reports 72.9 per cent as of April 2025. A target set, missed, and still being pursued is far stronger evidence of influence than a general claim that the report raised standards. Pair it with the finding that most new nurses now enter practice with a baccalaureate degree, which is the mechanism by which that proportion continues to climb.

Question three names two demographic pressures rather than one. An aging population and an increasingly diverse population make different demands on a nurse's role and education, and a paper that writes only about age has answered half the question. Aging drives complexity: more patients carrying several long-term conditions at once, more medication reconciliation, more coordination across settings. Diversity drives a different competence altogether, covering language access, health beliefs that determine whether treatment is accepted at all, and documented differences in outcome between populations receiving nominally identical care. Say what each pressure requires of education specifically, because the question is about the evolution of the nurse's role and education rather than about demographics in the abstract. The successor report, The Future of Nursing 2020-2030, frames its whole decade around health equity and is the natural citation for that second half.

Question four attaches two qualifiers to professional development and both of them are graded. Across the life span means your discussion of lifelong learning has to reach practice with different age groups, not continuing education in general. Within the health-illness continuum is language from your own programme, and the point behind it is that a patient occupies a moving position between wellness and illness, so competence has to extend to prevention and to end of life rather than only to acute treatment. The evidence base here is thinner than students expect. Mlambo and colleagues' metasynthesis found that nurses believe continuing professional development improves standards of care but that contemporary evidence for the claim remains limited, and that funding and time are the two largest barriers. Writing that honestly, as a valued activity with an incomplete evidence base, reads as stronger analysis than asserting a benefit the literature has not established.

Question five asks how nurses can assist in effectively managing patient care within an evolving health care system, and the rubric wants compelling rationale and insight rather than a list of activities. Anchor it in the report's own logic: if nurses practise to the full extent of their training and are full partners in redesign, then care management follows from scope of practice and from a seat at the table. Name mechanisms rather than virtues, so care coordination across settings, transitional care at discharge, nurse-led chronic disease management, and the data infrastructure that the fourth message calls for. One detail worth getting right in the reference list: the assignment calls this the 2010 report because the committee released it in October 2010, but the National Academies Press edition carries 2011, and 2011 is the year to cite.

Likely learning objectives

Inferred from the brief — check these against your own rubric.

  • 01
Distinguish the report's four key messages from its eight recommendations.
  • 02
Explain the significance of each message to practice, not merely restate it.
  • 03
Separate the report's influence on education from its influence on leadership.
  • 04
Evidence the influence claim with the baccalaureate target and its measured progress.
  • 05
Address both aging and diversity as distinct pressures on nursing education.
  • 06
Discuss lifelong learning across the life span and within the health-illness continuum.

Review before submission

Common mistakes

  • Summarising the eight recommendations in place of the four key messages.
  • Listing the four messages without explaining the significance of each, which the rubric grades separately.
  • Spending most of the word budget on question one and leaving questions four and five unanswered.
  • Treating education and leadership as a single influence rather than two.
  • Answering only the aging half of the aging-and-diverse question.
  • Ignoring the health-illness continuum, which is the programme's own framing and is named in the rubric.
  • Asserting that continuing professional development improves outcomes without acknowledging how limited that evidence is.
  • Citing the report as 2010 in the reference list when the National Academies Press edition is 2011.

Submission checklist

  • Four key messages are named as messages, not recommendations.
  • Each message is followed by its significance to practice.
  • Education and leadership are addressed as two separate influences.
  • Benefits and opportunities for BSN-prepared nurses are described specifically.
  • Both aging and increasing diversity are addressed, with what each requires of education.
  • Life span and health-illness continuum both appear in the professional development section.
  • The paper states a thesis about the report's influence in the introduction.
  • Word count sits between 750 and 1,000 and no abstract is included.
  • The reference list uses 2011 for the National Academies Press edition.
