NRS 451 Topic 2 DQ 3: choosing your topic

The lightest-looking post in the course, and the one that decides whether the Topic 3 paper is writeable. Requirement 4 is the graded core, and three of the seven listed issues make it hard.

Why this post decides next week's paper

This looks like the least demanding post of the topic and it is the most consequential, because the choice you make here is the paper you have to write next week. The DQ itself asks for three small things — pick a topic from the Topic 3 list, post the idea and your basic thoughts using the Topic 3 details, and give your peers useful reactions to theirs. What it does not say, and what decides your grade a week later, is that the six requirements of the Topic 3 paper are not equally easy to satisfy for all seven permitted issues. Choose on the strength of requirement 4 and the rest follows. Choose on which issue you feel most strongly about and you can spend a week fighting the assignment. The low word count is what makes it feel optional; the fact that it is graded separately from the paper it determines is what makes it worth thirty minutes of thought.

Requirement 4 is the graded core: explain the differing roles of nursing leaders and nursing managers, and discuss the different approaches they take, supported by the theories, principles, skills and roles in your readings. That sentence needs an issue on which the two genuinely pull apart. The distinction you will be assessed against is a real one and worth stating plainly before you pick: management is the set of roles concerned with planning, organising, prioritising, budgeting, staffing, coordinating and reporting, and its overriding function is to provide order and consistency; leadership is the art of establishing direction and influencing others, and its primary function is to produce change and movement. Every nurse is a leader by the ANA's Standards of Professional Performance. Not every nurse is a manager. That matters: because leadership is a standard of performance rather than a post, the paper can compare a staff nurse exercising leadership with a manager exercising management, and needs no second office door.

So the test to apply to each candidate issue is: would a manager and a leader facing this actually do different things, and could you name both? Add three more filters and you have a selection rubric. Requirement 2 needs a clear, evidenced link from the issue to quality of care and patient safety, so an issue with thin outcome literature will leave that section speculative. The assignment separately demands at least three peer-reviewed journal articles beyond your text, which quietly rules out any issue whose literature is mostly trade press and policy briefs. And requirement 6 asks you to name a leadership style and justify it in this setting, which is far easier when the issue has an obvious cultural or structural dimension to lean on. Requirement 5 adds one more filter: it asks what managers and leaders would additionally initiate to ensure professionalism across diverse settings, so a single-setting issue leaves that section thin.

Scored against those four filters, the seven permitted issues are not interchangeable:

Issue

Where leaders and managers genuinely diverge

How it scores

Nurse staffing ratios

The manager owns the budget, the roster and the shift-by-shift trade-off. The leader argues the professional standard and the policy case, and can meet the budget objection on its own terms

Strongest. The outcome evidence is the best of the seven, and the cost argument cuts both ways, which makes requirement 4 write itself

Bullying and incivility

The manager writes and enforces policy and documents incidents. The leader changes the norms that decide whether anyone reports at all — and the evidence that zero-tolerance policies have failed is precisely that split

Very strong. Large peer-reviewed base on prevalence and on the patient-safety link

Nurse turnover

The manager fills the vacancy and manages cost per hire and agency spend. The leader addresses why people are leaving, which is usually about practice environment rather than pay

Strong. Plenty of literature, and a clean quality-of-care link through continuity and skill mix

Use of contract and travel nurses

The manager buys coverage and controls premium cost. The leader carries team cohesion, orientation burden and continuity of care

Workable. Literature is growing but thinner, so budget research time

Floating

The manager balances the census across units. The leader owns competence, scope and whether a floated nurse feels able to say an assignment is unsafe

Workable but operational. The leader side needs work to avoid reading as manager-with-empathy

Unit closures and restructuring

The manager executes the reorganisation. The leader manages the change and the loss of trust it causes

Hard. Real divergence, but nursing-specific peer-reviewed literature is sparse and requirement 3 will bite

Magnet designation

Largely a transformational leadership agenda, with the manager supplying documentation and structural compliance

Deceptively hard. Abundant literature, but the two roles mostly point the same way, which strains requirement 4

Two things to actually put in the post, since "basic thoughts" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. First, state the issue and the setting concretely — a medical-surgical unit, a rural critical access hospital, a long-term care facility — because the leader-versus-manager divergence is setting-dependent and naming it early is what stops the paper from generalising. Second, say in one sentence what you expect the manager to do and what you expect the leader to do. If you cannot write that sentence now, you have found out cheaply that the topic will not support requirement 4, and swapping costs you nothing today and a great deal next week. That is the whole function of this DQ. What it does not need is a literature review, a definition of leadership, or an abstract for a paper you have not written. Basic thoughts means the reasoning behind the choice, stated so a classmate can argue with it.

The peer-response half is graded too, and there is a genuinely useful thing to say rather than the usual agreement. Run their topic through the same divergence test and tell them the answer. "Magnet is well documented but I struggled to see where a manager would disagree with a leader — what tension are you planning to use?" is worth more to a classmate than a paragraph endorsing their choice, and it demonstrates the leader-versus-manager distinction as clearly as your own post does. If their issue is one of the harder three, point at the specific requirement that will bite and suggest the angle that rescues it. If their tension is already clear, make the opposite move: name the counter-argument they will have to answer. A peer writing on staffing ratios will meet the objection that mandated minimums cut flexibility and raise cost.

Likely learning objectives

Inferred from the brief — check these against your own rubric.

  • 01
Distinguish nursing leadership from nursing management by function rather than by job title.
  • 02
Evaluate a candidate assignment topic against the requirements it will have to satisfy later.
  • 03
Identify whether a practice issue produces genuine divergence between leader and manager responses.
  • 04
Assess whether an issue has enough peer-reviewed outcome literature to support an evidence-based claim.
  • 05
Give peer feedback that tests a classmate's topic rather than endorsing it.

NRS 451 Topic 2 DQ 3 Select a topic for your Topic 3 Executive Summary assignment. Post your idea and basic thoughts about the topic using the assignment details from Topic 3 Description: Select a topic for your Topic 3 Executive Summary assignment. Post your idea and basic thoughts about the topic using the assignment details from Topic 3. You should provide thoughts to your peers about their topics and ideas that may assist them in completing their projects. In this assignment, you will be writing a 1,000-1,250-word paper describing the differing approaches of nursing leaders and managers to issues in practice. To complete this assignment, do the following: 1. Select an issue from the following list: bullying, unit closers and restructuring, floating, nurse turnover, nurse staffing ratios, use of contract employees (i.e., registry and travel nurses), or magnet designation. 2. Describe the selected issue. Discuss how it impacts quality of care and patient safety in the setting in which it occurs. 3. Discuss how professional standards of practice should be demonstrated in this situation to help rectify the issue or maintain professional conduct. 4. Explain the differing roles of nursing leaders and nursing managers in this instance and discuss the different approaches they take to address the selected issue and promote patient safety and quality care. Support your rationale by using the theories, principles, skills, and roles of the leader versus manager described in your readings. 5. Discuss what additional aspects mangers and leaders would need to initiate in order to ensure professionalism throughout diverse health care settings while addressing the selected issue. 6. Describe a leadership style that would best address the chosen issue. Explain why this style could be successful in this setting. Use at least three peer-reviewed journal articles other than those presented in your text or provided in the course. Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required. This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion. You are required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite. Refer to the LopesWrite Technical Support articles for assistance. This benchmark assignment assesses the following programmatic competencies: RN to BSN 1.1: Exemplify professionalism in diverse health care settings. 1.3: Exercise professional nursing leadership and management roles in the promotion of patient safety and quality care. 3.4: Demonstrate professional standards of practice. Turn the brief into deliverables

  1. 01
A topic selected from the Topic 3 list: bullying, unit closures and restructuring, floating, nurse turnover, nurse staffing ratios, use of contract employees, or magnet designation.
  2. 02
Your idea and basic thoughts about the topic, framed by the Topic 3 assignment details.
  3. 03
Responses to peers offering thoughts that may assist them with their projects.
03

What to put in the post

01

Name the topic and the setting

Open with the issue and where it occurs, since the leader-manager divergence is setting-dependent.

02

Why this issue and not another

Say briefly what made it the right pick — the tension it contains, or the evidence available.

03

The manager's response, in a sentence

State what the operational, order-and-consistency response to this issue looks like.

04

The leader's response, in a sentence

State the change-and-movement response, and make it a different action rather than a warmer version of the same one.

05

The quality and safety link you expect to evidence

Sketch the mechanism connecting the issue to patient outcomes, so requirement 2 has a target.

06

Peer responses

Apply your own selection test to a classmate's topic and report the result.

04

Checking the literature before you commit

Recommended databases

  • CINAHL
  • PubMed and PubMed Central
  • NCBI Bookshelf
  • Your institution's nursing databases via the GCU Library

Search sequence

  1. 1.
Do the literature check before you commit, not after. Search your candidate issue plus 'patient outcomes' or 'patient safety' and confirm three peer-reviewed articles exist; if they do not, that topic is eliminated and you have lost ten minutes rather than a week.
  2. 2.
Read a leadership-and-management source for the functional distinction before writing, so requirement 4 rests on a definition rather than on intuition about seniority.
  3. 3.
For staffing ratios, look for the ratio-legislation studies rather than opinion pieces — they carry effect sizes and a cost comparison, which is what lets you answer the manager's budget objection on its own ground.
  4. 4.
For bullying, search prevalence reviews rather than single-site surveys; the reported ranges are wide and citing one narrow figure as 'the' prevalence is an easy error.
  5. 5.
Note publication dates. Staffing and contract-labour literature moved substantially after 2020, and a pre-pandemic source describing travel nurse economics will be describing a different market.

  1. 01

Chapter 4 - Leadership and Management

Nursing Management and Professional Concepts, Chippewa Valley Technical College (NCBI Bookshelf) · 2022

The functional distinction requirement 4 rests on: management covers planning, organising, prioritising, budgeting, staffing, coordinating and reporting and exists to provide order and consistency, while leadership establishes direction and influences others and exists to produce change and movement. Also that the ANA makes Leadership a Standard of Professional Performance for every registered nurse, which is why all nurses are leaders but not all are managers.

  2. 02

Effects of nurse-to-patient ratio legislation on nurse staffing and patient mortality, readmissions, and length of stay: a prospective study in a panel of hospitals

    The Lancet · 2021

Why staffing ratios is the strongest of the seven topics: every one-patient-per-nurse improvement in staffing was associated with lower odds of mortality (OR 0.93) and of readmission (OR 0.93) and shorter length of stay, and the costs avoided through fewer readmissions and shorter stays were more than twice the cost of the additional nursing. That last finding is what lets a student answer a manager's budget objection on the manager's own terms.

  3. 03

Workplace incivility, lateral violence and bullying among nurses. A review about their prevalence and related factors

    Acta Biomedica · 2018

Why bullying is the second strongest topic, and where its leader-manager split actually lies. Reported prevalence is wide — incivility 67.5% to 90.4%, lateral violence 1% to 87.4%, bullying 2.4% to 81% — which is itself a caution against quoting one figure. Critically, it records a lack of evidence for policies and programmes to eradicate these behaviours and notes that zero-tolerance and informative policies have failed: the manager's instrument, shown not to work.

06

Before you post

Common mistakes

  • Writing the executive summary instead of the post. This is a discussion question asking for a topic and basic thoughts. A 1,000-word draft here is work you will have to redo, and it crowds out the peer engagement that is also being graded.
  • Choosing the issue you feel most strongly about. Conviction is not the criterion; requirement 4 is. Bullying you have personally experienced and magnet designation you find interesting are very different bets on how easy the paper will be to write.
  • Picking magnet designation without a tension. It has the most literature of the seven and the least leader-versus-manager disagreement, so requirement 4 becomes an exercise in inventing a conflict that the sources do not support.
  • Treating leader and manager as synonyms for senior and junior. The distinction is functional — order and consistency against change and movement — not hierarchical. A charge nurse can be exercising leadership and a director can be managing.
  • Naming the issue without a setting. The divergence between a manager's and a leader's response to floating looks completely different in a 900-bed academic centre and a 25-bed critical access hospital, and an unlocated issue produces an unlocated paper.
  • Ignoring the three-peer-reviewed-articles requirement at selection time. It is the requirement that eliminates topics, and it is far cheaper to discover the literature is thin now than in the middle of writing.
  • Responding to peers with agreement. 'Great topic, I look forward to reading it' is not substantive under the participation policy and helps nobody. Test their topic against the same criteria you used on your own.

Submission checklist

  • A topic is chosen from the seven permitted issues, named exactly.
  • The setting is specified concretely.
  • One sentence says what a manager would do about it.
  • One sentence says what a leader would do differently.
  • Those two sentences describe genuinely different actions, not different tones.
  • The expected quality-of-care and patient-safety link is stated.
  • You have confirmed at least three peer-reviewed articles exist beyond the course text.
  • A candidate leadership style for requirement 6 is at least gestured at.
  • The post is the length of a discussion response, not a draft paper.
  • Peer responses test the classmate's topic against the divergence criterion.
