NU580 Unit 3 DQ 1: NINR Themes Guide
Select one theme and one group. The instruction is doing real work: an answer that covers all four themes for people in general has nothing specific enough to be graded.

One theme, one group — the narrowing is the assignment
Two words in this prompt are load-bearing and both are instructions to narrow. Select one theme means one, and the marks come from depth rather than coverage. A specific group means a named population — the examples given are children, the elderly and migrant farm workers, which is a deliberate spread from a life stage to an occupational group. The National Institute of Nursing Research organises its science around themes such as symptom science, wellness and health promotion, self-management, and end-of-life and palliative care, with technology cutting across all of them. Pick the one that actually connects to a group you can say something concrete about. Symptom science and migrant farm workers, for instance, gives you occupational exposure, heat illness and a population that presents late; wellness and adolescents gives you screening and risk behaviour. The pairing is the whole assignment, so choose it before you start reading.
Then answer the actual question, which is how research in that area can affect health promotion across the lifespan for that group. Affect is a causal verb and it wants a pathway, not an assertion that more research would be beneficial. The pathway usually runs research produces an instrument or a finding, the finding changes an assessment or an intervention, the changed practice reaches the group through a specific service. Say who delivers it and where. Across the lifespan is the third constraint: even when your group is one life stage, say what happens before and after it, because health promotion is cumulative and a childhood intervention is justified by an adult outcome. One well-traced pathway with a cited study at its start beats four themes described in outline. If you cannot name the person who would deliver the changed practice, the pathway has a gap in it, and that gap is usually where the marks are lost.
Likely learning objectives
Inferred from the brief — check these against your own rubric.
- 01Identify the research themes that organise nursing science funding.
- 02Pair a research theme with a population it can actually reach.
- 03Trace a pathway from research finding to delivered health promotion.
- 04Apply a lifespan perspective to a single life stage.

Course-wide instructions that accompany this question
ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CLASS Discussion Questions (DQ) Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, include a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words. Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source. NU580-7B Unit 3 DQ 1 One or two sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words. I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses. Weekly Participation Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately. In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies. Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work). Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week. APA Format and Writing Quality Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required). Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation. I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition. Use of Direct Quotes I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly. As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content. It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source. LopesWrite Policy For assignments that need to be submitted to LopesWrite, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me. Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes. Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own? Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score. Late Policy The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies. Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances. If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect. I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension. As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading. Communication Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me: Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class. Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
Turn the brief into deliverables
- 01One named NINR theme, correctly attributed.
- 02One named group, specific enough to have identifiable health risks.
- 03A cited example of research in that theme touching that group.
- 04A pathway from finding to practice to the group, with a delivery point named.
- 05A statement of what the promotion effort produces later in the lifespan.
Theme, then group, then the research-to-practice link
The theme you selected and why
Name one NINR theme and justify the choice against your group.
The group and its health promotion profile
Describe the population's specific risks and access conditions.
What research in this theme has produced
Present a cited finding or instrument from the theme.
The pathway into practice
Trace finding to changed practice to delivery to this group.
Across the lifespan
Say what the promotion effort buys at a later life stage.
Finding NINR-funded work rather than general literature
Recommended databases
- National Institute of Nursing Research
- PubMed Central
- CINAHL
- Healthy People 2030
Search sequence
- 1.Fix the theme and the group before searching, so both terms go into the query.
- 2.Search for intervention studies in that theme naming your population.
- 3.Use Healthy People 2030 objectives to anchor the outcome your pathway ends at.
- 4.Look for one source describing where the group receives care, to name the delivery point.
Reference shortlist
These are authoritative starting points, not a ready-made bibliography. A qualified reviewer must confirm that each source fits the assignment and supports the claim beside which it is cited.

Review before submission
Common mistakes
- Describing all four themes rather than selecting one.
- Choosing a group so broad — 'adults', 'patients' — that no specific risk applies.
- Asserting that research is important instead of tracing how it reaches anyone.
- Ignoring the lifespan clause and writing only about the chosen stage.
Submission checklist
- Have you named exactly one theme?
- Is your group specific enough to have its own literature?
- Does your pathway say who delivers the intervention and where?
- Have you connected the chosen stage to an earlier or later one?
