NU580 Unit 5 DQ 1: Age Group and Environmental Health

There are two assignments here wearing one number: a developmental profile of an age group, and a separate hunt for the agencies behind the environmental health agenda. Answer both.

One age group, four questions, plus an agency hunt

Pick the age group deliberately, because the four questions that follow are much easier for some than others. Adolescents and older adults both have well-documented physical changes, clear pathological risks and abundant social determinants literature; toddlers have the physical changes but a thinner evidence base on social factors. Whichever you choose, keep the four questions genuinely separate. Physical changes means normal development — growth velocity, puberty, sarcopenia, changes in bone density, sensory decline — and not disease. Pathological risks means what commonly goes wrong at this stage, and it should follow from the physical changes you just described rather than arriving as a fresh list. Social factors affecting wellness is where determinants belong: school, employment, housing, transport, caregiving, isolation. Students routinely merge the first two, describe puberty and adolescent mental health as one thing, and lose the structure the marker is following. Keeping them apart also makes the post easier to mark, which matters when five sections are scored separately.

The fourth question — what advanced practice nurses can do — should be an intervention with a delivery point, not a list of good intentions. Say where the group is reachable. Adolescents are reachable in schools and in sports physicals; older adults in primary care, pharmacies and falls services. Then the second, separate task: identify the agencies supporting the National Health Promotion Agenda for environmental health. This is a research task with checkable answers, and it is worth doing properly. The agenda runs through Healthy People, which is led by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion within Health and Human Services, with the Environmental Protection Agency, the CDC's National Center for Environmental Health and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences all contributing objectives and data. Name them, and say what each contributes rather than listing acronyms. Two agencies with their roles stated beats five listed as initials, and the difference is visible in a single sentence.

NU580-7B Unit 5 DQ 1 Discussion Question/Prompt Select an age group (infant, toddler, child, adolescent, young adult, middle age adult or older adult). What physical changes is this group experiencing? What are some pathological risks? Are there social factors affecting their ability to achieve wellness? What can advanced practice nurses do to promote health in this group? Access the site, Healthy People Environmental Health. (Links to an external site.) (Links to an external site.)What agencies are supporting the National Health Promotion Agenda for environmental health? Present one agency and its role. Discussion Peer/Participation Prompt Respond to at least two other student’s postings with substantive comments. Substantive comments add to the discussion and provide your fellow students with information that will enhance the learning environment. References and citations should conform to the APA 6th edition. Remember: Please respect the opinions of others, even if their views differ. In other words, disagree professionally and respectfully. Plagiarism is never acceptable – give credit when credit is due – cite your sources.
Course-wide instructions that accompany this question

ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CLASS Discussion Questions (DQ) Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, include a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words. Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source. NU580-7B Unit 5 DQ 1 One or two sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words. I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses. Weekly Participation Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately. In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies. Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work). Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week. APA Format and Writing Quality Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required). Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation. I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition. Use of Direct Quotes I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly. As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content. It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source. LopesWrite Policy For assignments that need to be submitted to LopesWrite, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me. Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes. Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own? Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score. Late Policy The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies. Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances. If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect. I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension. As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading. Communication Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me: Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class. Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.

Turn the brief into deliverables

  1. 01
    One named age group.
  2. 02
Normal physical changes for that group, separated from disease.
  3. 03
Pathological risks that follow from those changes.

Describe development or ageing for the chosen stage, without disease.

02

Pathological risks arising from those changes

Derive the common problems from the physiology already described.

03

Social factors affecting wellness

04

What advanced practice nurses can do

05

Agencies behind the environmental health agenda

Identify the bodies supporting the national agenda and their roles.

04

Healthy People environmental health, and who funds it

Recommended databases

  • Healthy People 2030
  • MedlinePlus
  • NCBI Bookshelf
  • PubMed Central

Search sequence

  1. 1.
Choose the age group before searching so every source is about that stage.
  2. 2.
Separate your developmental sources from your disease sources at the point of collection.
  3. 3.
Open the Healthy People environmental health objectives and record who owns them.
  4. 4.
Check each agency's own site for its stated role rather than inferring it.

Review before submission

Common mistakes

  • Merging physical change and pathology into one section.
  • Listing social factors that would apply to any age group.
  • Proposing education as the intervention without saying where it is delivered.
  • Answering the agency question with one acronym and no explanation.

Submission checklist

  • Are normal changes and pathological risks in separate sections?
  • Are your social factors specific to this age group?
  • Does the intervention name a setting where the group can be reached?
  • Have you named more than one agency and said what each does?
