Sixteen cells, and why prose loses marks in them

This is a template, not an essay, and the format decides the grade before the content does. Eight areas of practice down the side — ethics, education, leadership, public health, health care administration, informatics, business and finance, and specialty — against two roles across the top gives sixteen cells, each of which has to say something specific about how that role engages that domain. Submissions that write flowing paragraphs into a comparison grid lose marks twice: the comparison stops being visible, and the reader has to do the differentiating that the assignment asked you to do. Write in the cells, keep the entries parallel between the two columns, and reserve prose for the regulatory bodies element where a sentence is genuinely needed. The template is also the deliverable, so anything that will not fit inside a cell is probably answering a question the assignment did not ask.

The comparator role is a real choice and most of the difficulty follows from it. You compare your future role against one of seven options — nurse educator, nurse leader, family nurse practitioner, acute care nurse practitioner, a graduate nurse with an emphasis in public health, health care administration, business or informatics, clinical nurse specialist, or doctor of nursing practice. Choose one that differs from yours across most of the eight rows, because a comparison between two adjacent roles produces a grid where half the cells say much the same thing. A family nurse practitioner against a nurse educator diverges on nearly every row. Two nurse practitioner specialties diverge on one. Make that decision first and the rest of the template becomes a matter of filling in what you already know. Check the template's column headings before choosing, since the organizer expects one named role in each and not a category.

Some rows will not map onto a role's daily work, and how you handle those separates a complete grid from a padded one. A nurse educator does not manage a budget, and a clinical nurse specialist may have no formal public health remit — but the row is still answerable, because the question is how the role *relates to* that area rather than whether it performs it. An educator engages business and finance through programme costing, enrolment and resource allocation. A bedside-focused advanced practice role engages public health through population screening, immunisation and reportable conditions. Naming the point of contact is a stronger answer than writing not applicable, and it is also the answer that shows you understand the collaboration the assignment is actually about. Every row that gets a real answer is a row the rubric can score, and not applicable is the one entry guaranteed to score nothing.

The regulatory bodies requirement is where this assignment is won, and it is easy to under-read. The brief asks you to include any regulatory bodies or certification agencies that provide guidance or parameters on how these roles incorporate concepts into practice — so the answer is not a list of acronyms but a mapping of who governs what. The APRN Consensus Model is the structural answer, because it ties licensure, accreditation, certification and education together and explains why population focus and role are regulated separately. Under it sit the certifying bodies for each role, the accrediting bodies for the programmes, the state boards that grant the licence, and the professional standards that shape scope. Say which body sets which parameter, and the cells stop being decorative. A single sentence per body, saying what it licenses, certifies or accredits, is enough and is far more use than an alphabet of initials.

Two constraints on sourcing shape the work more than they look. Three to five sources, all published within the last five years, rules out most of the foundational documents you would instinctively reach for — cite the current page a body maintains rather than the original consensus paper, and check publication dates before building an argument on something older. And although APA style is not required for the body of the assignment, documentation of sources must still follow APA formatting, which means the citations inside the cells and the reference list at the end are graded even though the grid is not. Neither constraint is difficult; both are routinely missed because they sit below the interesting part of the brief. Both are quick to satisfy at the start and awkward to retrofit once the grid is already full of citations.

Details: Advanced registered nurses work in highly collaborative environments and must collaborate with interdisciplinary teams in order to provide excellent patient care. Besides knowing the role and scope of one’s own practice, it is essential to understand the role and scope of other nurse specialties to ensure effective collaboration among nurses, the organization, and other professionals with whom advanced registered nurses regularly interact. Use the “Nursing Roles Graphic Organizer Template” to differentiate how advanced registered nurse roles relate to and collaborate with different areas of nursing practice. Compare your future role with one of the following: nurse educator; nurse leader; family nurse practitioner; acute care nurse practitioner; graduate nurse with an emphasis/specialty in public health, health care administration, business, or informatics; clinical nurse specialist; doctor of nursing practice. Indicate in the appropriate columns on the template which roles you are comparing. Assignment Advanced Registered Nurses Work Make sure to compare the following areas of practice in your graphic organizer: Ethics Education Leadership Public Health Health Care Administration Informatics Business/Finance Specialty (e.g., Family, Acute Care) Advanced Registered Nurses Work Include any regulatory bodies or certification agencies that provide guidance or parameters on how these roles incorporate concepts into practice. You are required to cite three to five sources to complete this assignment. Sources must be published within the last 5 years and appropriate for the assignment criteria and nursing content. While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion. You are not required to submit this assignment to Turnitin.

I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. Your assignments in weeks 4 and 5 require early planning as you would need to present a teaching plan and interview a community health provider. I advise you look at the requirements for these assignments at the beginning of the course and plan accordingly. I have posted the YouTube link that explains all the class assignments in detail. It is required that you watch this 32-minute video as the assignments from week 3 through 5 require that you follow the instructions to the letter to succeed. Failure to complete these assignments according to instructions might lead to a zero. After watching the video, please schedule a one-on-one with me to discuss your topic for your project by the second week of class. Use this link to schedule a 15-minute session. Please, call me at the time of your appointment on my number. Please note that I will NOT call you. Please, be advised I do NOT accept any assignments by email. If you are having technical issues with uploading an assignment, contact the technical department and inform me of the issue. If you have any issues that would prevent you from getting your assignments to me by the deadline, please inform me to request a possible extension. Note that working fulltime or overtime is no excuse for late assignments. There is a 5%-point deduction for every day your assignment is late. This only applies to approved extensions. Late assignments will not be accepted. If you think you would be needing accommodations due to any reasons, please contact the appropriate department to request accommodations. Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements. Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week. I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!

What the graphic organizer has to contain

  1. 01
The completed Nursing Roles Graphic Organizer Template.
  2. 02
Your intended future role and one comparator role, named in the appropriate columns.
  3. 03
Entries for all eight areas of practice, for both roles.
  4. 04
The regulatory bodies or certification agencies that guide each role.
  5. 05
Three to five sources, all published within the last five years.
  6. 06
Source documentation formatted to APA guidelines.
03

From comparator choice to the regulatory mapping

01

Choose the comparator for maximum divergence

Pick the role from the list that differs from yours on the most rows.

02

Fill the clinical rows first

Ethics, education, specialty and informatics, where both roles have obvious engagement.

03

Answer the awkward rows by contact point

Business and finance, health care administration and public health for roles that do not perform them.

04

Map the regulators onto the parameters

The consensus framework, the certifying bodies, the accrediting bodies and the state board.

05

Check the sources against the window

Three to five references, all within five years, documented in APA format.

04

Finding sources inside the five-year window

Recommended databases

  • NCSBN and state board of nursing publications
  • Certifying and accrediting body websites
  • AACN and professional association standards
  • CINAHL and PubMed for role-scope literature

Search sequence

  1. 1.
Start with the regulatory framework rather than the individual roles, because it explains why the roles are bounded the way they are and gives the grid its structure.
  2. 2.
Then find the certifying body for each of the two roles you are comparing, since the specialty row turns on which credential each holds.
  3. 3.
Check the accreditation side separately from certification, as they are different bodies doing different work and the brief asks about both guidance and parameters.
  4. 4.
Filter every source by publication date before using it, because the five-year window excludes several documents this topic naturally points at.
05

The regulatory framework and the certifying bodies

These are authoritative starting points, not a ready-made bibliography. A qualified reviewer must confirm that each source fits the assignment and supports the claim beside which it is cited.

Nothing here is cleared for citation until you have read it.

  1. 01

    APRN

National Council of State Boards of Nursing · 2024

The regulatory model behind advanced practice licensure, covering licensure, accreditation, certification and education and the way role and population focus are regulated separately. This is the structural answer to the regulatory bodies requirement, because it explains why each role's parameters are set by more than one organisation.

  2. 02

    ANCC Certification Center

American Nurses Credentialing Center, American Nurses Association · 2024

The certification catalogue for nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, informatics, executive and educator credentials. Use it to attach a specific credential to each role in the specialty row, which is more precise than naming the role alone.

  3. 03

    AACN Essentials

American Association of Colleges of Nursing · 2024

The competency framework that shapes what advanced level nursing education has to cover, including domains for population health, quality and safety, informatics and professionalism. It maps almost directly onto the eight areas in the organizer, which makes it a good source for saying how a role engages a domain rather than whether it performs it.

  4. 04

    American Association of Nurse Practitioners

American Association of Nurse Practitioners · 2024

Certification, state practice environment data and scope-of-practice positions for nurse practitioners. Useful for the leadership and health care administration rows, where the degree of practice authority differs by state and is a genuine point of comparison between roles.

06

Before the organizer is submitted

Common mistakes

  • Writing paragraphs into a comparison grid so the comparison stops being visible.
  • Choosing a comparator so close to your own role that half the cells match.
  • Writing not applicable for business and finance or public health instead of naming the contact point.
  • Listing regulatory acronyms without saying which body sets which parameter.
  • Missing the APRN Consensus Model, which is what ties licensure and certification together.
  • Citing foundational documents that fall outside the five-year window.
  • Assuming APA does not apply because the body of the assignment does not require it.
  • Leaving the two columns non-parallel, so the rows compare different things.

Submission checklist

  • Both roles are named in the correct columns of the template.
  • All eight areas of practice have entries for both roles.
  • Entries are parallel across the two columns within each row.
  • No row is answered with not applicable.
  • Regulatory and certifying bodies are attached to specific parameters.
  • Three to five sources are cited, none older than five years.
  • The reference list follows APA formatting.
  • The rubric has been read against the completed organizer.
