Nursing theory and conceptual model presentation

Two requirements decide the grade and both need literature: evidence for the model's efficacy in practice, and three evidence-based examples each carrying its own support and rationale. Description alone will not reach them.

Theory and conceptual model are not the same thing

Choose a theory you can find evidence for, not the one you find most appealing, because two of the requirements are empirical rather than descriptive. Orem's self-care deficit theory, Watson's human caring, Roy's adaptation model, Benner's novice to expert and Neuman's systems model all have substantial applied literature; a theory with an elegant structure and no published application will leave you with slides you cannot fill. Then keep the two terms distinct, because the prompt asks you to explain how the theory proves the conceptual model, which only makes sense if they are different things. The conceptual model is the abstract framework — the concepts and how they relate; the theory is the more specific, testable set of propositions derived from it. Say which is which for your choice, and treat 'proves' as 'operationalises and supports', since a model is not the kind of thing that gets proved.

The four metaparadigm concepts — person, environment, health and nursing — must each be addressed, and the useful move is to show how your chosen theory defines each one distinctively rather than reciting the standard definitions. Orem's person is a self-care agent; Watson's environment includes the caring moment itself. That contrast is the whole point of the requirement. Then the three evidence-based examples, each needing support and rationale, which means three separate citations showing the theory applied in practice with a stated result — a discharge-education programme built on self-care deficit theory, a unit-level caring intervention with measured satisfaction, a preceptor programme structured on novice-to-expert stages. Because this is a presentation, put the argument on the slides and the elaboration in the speaker notes; ten to fifteen slides is not many once four metaparadigm concepts and three worked examples all have to fit on them.

Likely learning objectives

Inferred from the brief — check these against your own rubric.

  • 01
Distinguish a conceptual model from the theory derived from it.
  • 02
Locate published evidence for a theory's application and outcomes.
  • 03
Show how a specific theory defines each of the four metaparadigm concepts distinctively.
  • 04
Build three worked practice examples, each with its own supporting citation.

Nursing theories are tested and systematic ways to implement nursing practice. Select a nursing theory and its conceptual model. Prepare a 10‐15 slide PowerPoint in which you describe the nursing theory and its conceptual model and demonstrate its application in nursing practice. Include the following: Present an overview of the nursing theory. Provide evidence that demonstrates support for the model’s efficacy in nursing practice. Explain how the theory proves the conceptual model. Explain how the nursing theory incorporates the four metaparadigm concepts. Provide three evidence‐based examples that demonstrate how the nursing theory supports nursing practice. Provide support and rationale for each. Refer to the resource, “Creating Effective PowerPoint Presentations,” located in the Student Success Center, for additional guidance on completing this assignment in the appropriate style. While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion. You are required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite. Refer to the LopesWrite Technical Support articles for assistance. Questions: 1. Explain how the nursing theory incorporates the four metaparadigm concepts. 2. Provide three evidence-based examples that demonstrate how the nursing theory supports nursing practice. Provide support and rationale for each. The theory that my group choose was: Hildegard Peplau’s Interpersonal Relations Theory Hildegard Peplau’s interpersonal relations theory is referred to as psychodynamic nursing, which refers to the understanding of one’s behavior. Peplau’s (1909-1999) work was a major contribution to mental health laws and defined nursing as an interpersonal process of therapeutic interactions between an ill individual in need of health services and an educated nurse trained to recognize and respond to those needs (Peplau, 1952). She considered the person to be an organism that desires to reduce tension or anxiety. The environment is not clearly defined but is made up of existing forces outside of the person. Health is defined as forward movement of the human process toward creative and productive community living. Nursing is a therapeutic interpersonal process existing in four phases: orientation, identification, exploitation, and resolution (see Figure 2.5). The nurse has a variety of roles that include stranger, teacher, resource, counselor, technical expert, and leader (Creasia & Friberg, 2011). This theory can be explained as the understanding of the interpersonal relationship between the patient and the nurse. Peplau recognized that such a relationship does exist, and the nurse is not just a messenger between the physician and patient.

Turn the brief into deliverables

  1. 01
A 10-15 slide PowerPoint with speaker notes.
  2. 02
An overview of the theory and its conceptual model, kept distinct.
  3. 03
Published evidence for the model's efficacy in practice.
  4. 04
All four metaparadigm concepts, defined as the theory defines them.
  5. 05
Three evidence-based examples, each with support and rationale.
  6. 06
A reference slide in APA format.
03

Overview, evidence, metaparadigm, three examples

01

Overview of the theory

Introduce the theorist, the theory and the conceptual model it derives from.

02

Evidence for efficacy

Present published evidence that the model works in practice.

03

How the theory operationalises the model

Explain the relationship between the abstract framework and the testable propositions.

04

The four metaparadigm concepts

Define person, environment, health and nursing as this theory defines them.

05

Three applied examples

Give three practice applications, each with its own citation and rationale.

04

Finding efficacy evidence for your chosen theory

Recommended databases

  • CINAHL
  • PubMed Central
  • Nursology theory repository
  • Your course's nursing theory text

Search sequence

  1. 1.
Check the applied literature for your candidate theory BEFORE committing to it — that decision governs whether two requirements are answerable.
  2. 2.
Search the theory's name together with an intervention term to find implementations rather than commentary.
  3. 3.
Look for the theorist's own statement of the metaparadigm concepts, since secondary summaries flatten the distinctive parts.
  4. 4.
Prefer applications reporting an outcome measure, so the three examples have results rather than descriptions.

Review before submission

Common mistakes

  • Using theory and conceptual model interchangeably, which makes one requirement unanswerable.
  • Choosing a theory with no applied literature and then having no efficacy evidence to present.
  • Reciting standard metaparadigm definitions instead of the theory's own.
  • Giving three examples that share a single citation between them.
  • Overfilling slides instead of using the speaker notes.

Submission checklist

  • Are the theory and its conceptual model clearly distinguished?
  • Is there published evidence of the model's efficacy, not just description?
  • Are all four metaparadigm concepts addressed in the theory's own terms?
  • Do the three examples have three separate supporting sources?
  • Is the deck within 10-15 slides with the detail in speaker notes?
