An assessment, not a description — findings need a standard

The word assessment sets the bar. A description says the parking area has four light poles; an assessment says the parking area has four poles at roughly thirty metre spacing producing visible dark bands between them, which fails the uniformity expectation for a surveilled area and matters because the entry doors sit inside one of those bands. The difference is a standard and a consequence. Fennelly gives you the framework for both lighting and access control, and the assignment names him for that reason, but you should reach past the text for at least one independent source so your criteria are not one author's opinion. The ungated community requirement is the interesting constraint. Gated sites let you write about barriers and credentials; an ungated one has no controlled perimeter at all, so the analysis has to move inward to natural surveillance, territorial definition, lighting, and access control at the building rather than the boundary.

Structure the paper from the outside in and keep internal and external genuinely separate, since the assignment asks for both. External covers approach routes, sightlines, landscaping that provides concealment, lighting levels and uniformity, signage, and where a vehicle can stop unobserved. Internal covers door hardware, key and credential management, visitor handling, interior lighting on stairwells and corridors, and where sensitive spaces sit relative to public ones. For each finding, state the observation, the criterion it fails, the risk it creates and a proportionate recommendation — that four-part shape is what makes a security report readable and is also the easiest way to keep yourself honest. Two things to avoid: recommending expensive technology for a problem that trimmed shrubbery would solve, and photographing or naming a real address in a way that publishes a genuine vulnerability. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.
