Gage is evidence about connections, not about a spot

Before writing about what the case reveals, find out what it actually records, because the Gage story has been embellished at every retelling. The contemporary accounts are brief: an iron rod passed through the left frontal region, he survived, his physician Harlow reported changes in temperament and reliability, and he later worked as a stage coach driver in Chile, which is difficult to reconcile with the profoundly disinhibited figure of the textbook version. Reviews of how the case is reported in the scientific literature find inventions repeated as fact for over a century. Say what is documented and flag what is not, because the reliability of the evidence is part of what the case teaches. A post that repeats the legend confidently has demonstrated the opposite of the skill the topic is testing. The safest rule is to attribute every behavioural claim to Harlow or to a modern review.

On localisation, the honest reading is subtler than frontal lobe equals personality. Modern reconstructions of the skull suggest the rod destroyed a substantial share of white matter connections in the left hemisphere as well as cortex, so the case supports a network claim rather than a single-region one: complex functions depend on connected systems, and disconnection can produce deficits without destroying any single centre. That is a stronger and more defensible conclusion, and it is what modern neuroscientists learn from it. The second half of the question is methodological. A single case can show that something is possible and can suggest a hypothesis, but it cannot establish prevalence or rule out confounds, and Gage's own recovery over time is evidence for plasticity that the standard telling omits entirely. It is also worth saying that Gage lived for twelve more years and held demanding work, because a case used to prove permanent impairment is evidence of recovery as well.
