Regulation is the control half, not the knowing half

Metacognition has two halves and the prompt names one of them. Metacognitive knowledge is what you believe about your own memory — that you are bad with names, that highlighting helps. Metacognitive regulation is the control loop: planning what to study, monitoring whether it is working, and adjusting when it is not. The question is about regulation, so the post should be about that loop. The mechanism worth explaining is judgements of learning. After studying, people rate how likely they are to recall an item, and those ratings drive what gets restudied. When the judgements are accurate, regulation allocates effort to the weak items and performance improves. When they are poorly calibrated, effort goes to material that already feels fluent and the weak items are dropped — which is exactly why rereading feels productive and produces so little. This makes fluency the villain: the feeling of knowing comes from ease of processing, not retention.

The evidence is more interesting than a simple more regulation is better. Awareness does not automatically produce control: studies of undergraduates find students who can describe good strategies and still do not deploy them, so the gap between monitoring and regulating is real and measurable. Prediction accuracy tends to correlate with performance, but the causal direction is not settled, since better learners may simply have more accurate cues to judge from. Say that rather than overclaiming. The strongest practical point is that regulation improves when monitoring is made less deceptive: retrieval practice gives a truer signal of what is retained than rereading does, so it improves both the memory and the judgement that governs further study. Finish with one testable prediction, which is what turns a summary into a discussion post. Make the prediction specific enough to fail, naming the comparison condition and the outcome you would measure against it.
