PSY640 applications in personality testing discussion
A PSY640 “discussion” carrying five deliverables, including a recorded client feedback session whose whole difficulty is that its audience is the client rather than the class.

How many deliverables are hidden in this PSY640 discussion?
The word *discussion* is the trap, and it is worth stopping on before you plan anything. This is labelled an initial post, and inside it sit five separate deliverables: a one-paragraph MMPI-2-RF summary for Mr. I, a three- to five-minute recorded feedback session for Ms. S with the link included, an ethical and professional evaluation of **both** reports, an analysis of the psychometric methodology behind the MMPI-2-RF, and at least two further tests with a three-part justification each. A 300-word post loses most of the marks before it is read. Build a checklist from the brief's own verbs — summarise, create, evaluate, analyse, develop, justify — and treat each as a section, because none of them is optional and none substitutes for another. Doing the screencast first is also worth considering, since recording it forces you to decide what the results actually mean before you write anything analytical about them.
The screencast is the piece most often produced for the wrong audience. It is a feedback session with **Ms. S**, not a presentation to your classmates, and the brief says so twice — walk *the client* through the report, in *language your client can understand*. That constraint is the assignment. Uniform T scores, elevations above 65, RC scale labels and codetypes are exactly the vocabulary to strip out; what replaces them is what the finding means for her, what it does not mean, and what happens next. Plan for a client interrupting: the professional standard being tested here is explaining results in a way the recipient can actually use, which is a communication skill rather than a knowledge one. A useful test before recording: read your script aloud and mark every term you would have to define, then either define it in the recording or remove the sentence.
*Evaluate the contents of both psychological evaluations in terms of ethical standards* is not one question asked twice, because the two documents are ethically different objects. Mr. I's is a **computer-generated interpretive report**: an automated narrative produced from a scored protocol, with no clinician's judgement in the sentences themselves. Ms. S's was written by a licensed psychologist who saw her. The standing professional position is that automated interpretation is a professional aid and the psychologist retains responsibility for the interpretation given — so the sharp question is what a computer-generated narrative can and cannot license a clinician to say, and whether the report you are reading respects that boundary. Say what each report does well, too, since an evaluation that finds only faults reads as a checklist applied rather than a judgement made. The distinction matters for the third client in the room, which is the referrer relying on the document.
The psychometrics question asks how the instrument was **built and validated**, not what it measures, and “it is reliable and valid” is a non-answer. Name the actual methodology: the MMPI-2-RF was derived from the MMPI-2 item pool through the Restructured Clinical scales, whose construction was driven by the finding that a shared demoralisation factor inflated correlations between the original clinical scales and blurred their discriminant validity. Then describe the hierarchical structure — higher-order, restructured clinical, specific problems, interest and PSY-5 scales — and the over- and under-reporting validity scales, which are the part of the instrument doing the most work in an inpatient referral like Mr. I's. Elevations are reported as uniform T scores against a normative sample, and saying which comparison group a score is referenced to is part of describing the validation properly.
The additional tests carry a three-part justification and most answers supply one part. The brief wants the **validity of the measure**, and the client's **presenting concerns**, **diagnosis** and **prognosis** — so a test defended only by its psychometrics has answered a quarter of the question. Two further constraints are easy to miss. They must be tests of *personality or emotional functioning*, which rules out the cognitive and achievement measures that are otherwise the obvious additions. And there are two clients in very different settings, one a psychiatric inpatient and one seen in an outpatient evaluation that already included ability testing, so one list serving both is almost certainly wrong for at least one of them. Write the justification as four short claims rather than one long paragraph, because it is graded against four anchors and a marker should be able to find each of them.
Deliverable | What it actually requires | The version that loses marks |
|---|---|---|
MMPI-2-RF summary, Mr. I | One paragraph, from the interpretive report | A general account of what the MMPI measures |
Screencast for Ms. S | 3–5 minutes, plain language, link posted | A narrated report read to classmates |
Ethical evaluation | Both reports, and they differ in kind | One set of ethics points applied twice |
Psychometric analysis | How the instrument was constructed | “The MMPI-2-RF is reliable and valid” |
Two further tests | Personality or emotional functioning only | An IQ or achievement battery |
Justification | Validity + concerns + diagnosis + prognosis | Psychometric properties alone |
Likely learning objectives
Inferred from the brief — check these against your own rubric.
- 01Read an automated interpretive report critically rather than as a finding.
- 02Communicate assessment results to the person they are about.
- 03Distinguish the ethical obligations attached to automated and clinician-authored reports.
- 04Describe how a personality inventory was constructed and validated, not only what it measures.
- 05Select further measures against both psychometric quality and clinical need.

Important information for writing discussion questions and participation Hi Class, Please read through the following information on writing a Discussion question response and participation posts. Contact me if you have any questions. Important information on Writing a Discussion Question Your response needs to be a minimum of 150 words (not including your list of references) There needs to be at least TWO references with ONE being a peer reviewed professional journal article. Include in-text citations in your response Do not include quotes—instead summarize and paraphrase the information Follow APA-7th edition Points will be deducted if the above is not followed Participation –replies to your classmates or instructor A minimum of 6 responses per week, on at least 3 days of the week. Each response needs at least ONE reference with citations—best if it is a peer reviewed journal article Each response needs to be at least 75 words in length (does not include your list of references) Responses need to be substantive by bringing information to the discussion or further enhance the discussion. Responses of “I agree” or “great post” does not count for the word count. Follow APA 7th edition Points will be deducted if the above is not followed Remember to use and follow APA-7th edition for all weekly assignments, discussion questions, and participation points. Here are some helpful links Student paper example Citing Sources The Writing Center is a great resource Welcome to class Hello class and welcome to the class and I will be your instructor for this course. This is a -week course and requires a lot of time commitment, organization, and a high level of dedication. Please use the class syllabus to guide you through all the assignments required for the course. If you have not heard from me within 24 hours and need to contact me urgently, please send a follow up text to. I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. Your assignments in weeks 4 and 5 require early planning as you would need to present a teaching plan and interview a community health provider. I advise you look at the requirements for these assignments at the beginning of the course and plan accordingly. I have posted the YouTube link that explains all the class assignments in detail. It is required that you watch this 32-minute video as the assignments from week 3 through 5 require that you follow the instructions to the letter to succeed. Failure to complete these assignments according to instructions might lead to a zero. After watching the video, please schedule a one-on-one with me to discuss your topic for your project by the second week of class. Use this link to schedule a 15-minute session. Please, call me at the time of your appointment on my number. Please note that I will NOT call you. Please, be advised I do NOT accept any assignments by email. If you are having technical issues with uploading an assignment, contact the technical department and inform me of the issue. If you have any issues that would prevent you from getting your assignments to me by the deadline, please inform me to request a possible extension. Note that working fulltime or overtime is no excuse for late assignments. There is a 5%-point deduction for every day your assignment is late. This only applies to approved extensions. Late assignments will not be accepted. If you think you would be needing accommodations due to any reasons, please contact the appropriate department to request accommodations. Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements. Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week. I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
What the initial post and screencast must contain
- 01A one-paragraph summary of Mr. I's computer-generated MMPI-2-RF results.
- 02A three- to five-minute screencast feedback session for Ms. S.
- 03The screencast link, included in the initial post.
- 04An evaluation of both reports against ethical standards.
- 05An evaluation of the professionalism of the interpretation in each.
- 06An analysis of the psychometric methodology behind the MMPI-2-RF.
- 07At least two additional tests of personality or emotional functioning.
- 08A justification of each addition against validity, presenting concerns, diagnosis and prognosis.
From two case reports to a defended list of further measures
Mr. I: summary of the interpretive report
Condense the machine-generated MMPI-2-RF findings into one paragraph.
Ms. S: the feedback session
Plan and record a client-facing walkthrough of her assessment report.
Ethical evaluation of the two reports
Assess each against professional standards, treating them as different objects.
Professionalism of the interpretation
Judge how findings were expressed, qualified and bounded in each report.
Psychometric methodology of the MMPI-2-RF
Explain how the instrument was derived, structured and validated.
Additional measures and their justification
Propose at least two further tests, per client, with the four-part rationale.
Finding how the MMPI-2-RF was built, not what it measures
Recommended databases
- The two supplied case documents
- The assigned textbook chapters and Department of Labor guide
- PubMed Central
- Test publisher technical manuals
Search sequence
- 1.Read both supplied documents closely before any outside search, because four of the five deliverables are judgements about those specific documents rather than about the instrument in general.
- 2.Search for the construction rationale of the restructured scales rather than for MMPI-2-RF results, since the brief asks about development and validation and outcome studies do not answer that.
- 3.Search for validity-scale research in inpatient or partial-hospitalisation samples, which is the setting Mr. I was referred from and where over- and under-reporting matters most.
- 4.For each candidate additional test, find published evidence of its validity in a population resembling your client, because the brief ties the justification to presenting concerns and prognosis rather than to psychometrics alone.
MMPI-2-RF psychometrics and psychological testing sources
These are authoritative starting points, not a ready-made bibliography. A qualified reviewer must confirm that each source fits the assignment and supports the claim beside which it is cited.
Nothing here is cleared for citation until you have read it.
- 01
Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory
StatPearls, NCBI Bookshelf · 2024
The starting point for the psychometrics section. It covers the instrument's lineage from the original MMPI through the MMPI-2 to the restructured form, the scale families, and how results are meant to be interpreted and by whom — which is also the material you need for the professionalism half of the evaluation, since it sets out what an interpretation is entitled to claim.
- 02
MMPI-2-RF Validity Scales Add Utility for Predicting Treatment Engagement During Partial Psychiatric Hospitalization
Journal of Clinical Psychology in Medical Settings · 2024
Evidence that the validity scales carry incremental information rather than merely screening protocols in or out — in a partial-hospitalisation sample, which is close to Mr. I's referral context. Use it to give the psychometric section something empirical to stand on, and to argue that a computer-generated narrative should be read against the protocol's validity indicators rather than accepted at face value.
- 03
CAT-PD and MMPI-3 Validity Scales Detect Simulated Overreporting and Underreporting
Assessment · 2025
Two uses. It demonstrates the simulation methodology by which over- and under-reporting scales are validated, which is exactly the kind of “psychometric methodology” the brief asks you to analyse. And it works with the MMPI-3, the successor instrument — worth a sentence, because a recommendation of further measures that ignores the newer form of the test already in use looks dated.
- 04
Overview of Psychological Testing
National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine · 2015
The source for “acceptable validity” as a defensible standard rather than a phrase. It reviews the forms of validity evidence, the norms and standardisation a test must have, and how instruments are appraised for a given purpose and population — which is what turns your two additional test recommendations into an argument instead of a preference.
Before the personality testing post is submitted
Common mistakes
- Treating the word “discussion” as a length, and posting a few hundred words against five deliverables.
- Recording the screencast for classmates rather than for Ms. S.
- Leaving T scores, codetypes and scale abbreviations in the client-facing feedback.
- Applying one ethical analysis to both reports as though they were the same kind of document.
- Ignoring that Mr. I's report is machine-generated and Ms. S's is clinician-authored.
- Answering the psychometrics question with reliability and validity coefficients instead of construction method.
- Omitting the validity scales, which are the most consequential part of the instrument in an inpatient referral.
- Proposing cognitive or achievement tests when the brief specifies personality or emotional functioning.
- Justifying an added test on psychometric grounds alone.
- Recommending the same two tests for two clients in very different settings.
- Forgetting to post the screencast link, which makes the largest deliverable unmarkable.
Submission checklist
- The Mr. I summary is one paragraph and draws on the interpretive report itself.
- The screencast runs between three and five minutes.
- The screencast is addressed to the client and contains no untranslated jargon.
- The screencast link is in the initial post and is accessible.
- Both reports are evaluated, and the evaluation distinguishes them.
- The automated nature of Mr. I's report is addressed explicitly.
- The psychometric analysis names the construction method, not just the outcome.
- The validity scales are covered.
- Both added tests measure personality or emotional functioning.
- Each justification covers validity, presenting concerns, diagnosis and prognosis.
- The recommendations differ between the two clients where their circumstances differ.
