Step one has to make step two possible
Two steps, and the second one is the harder half even though it looks like data collection. Step one is a one-page paper explaining the difference between natural and added sugars; step two is finding all the added sugars hidden in the ingredient lists of five foods. The word *hidden* is doing the work — added sugars are rarely listed as "sugar", and the point of the exercise is that a consumer reading a label sees a dozen unfamiliar ingredient names rather than one familiar one. So the paper's explanation has to give you the criteria you then apply in step two, which means writing step one first and using it. The two parts should visibly connect: a definition in step one that does not let you classify a specific ingredient in step two is a definition that has not been made operational.
The distinction itself is more slippery than a one-page paper suggests, and getting it right is where the marks are. Naturally occurring sugars are intrinsic to the food — lactose in milk, fructose in whole fruit — held inside a cellular structure and arriving with fibre, water and micronutrients. Added sugars are those put in during processing or preparation. The awkward cases are the ones worth naming: fruit juice concentrate is chemically identical to added sugar and is treated as added in most regulatory definitions, honey and maple syrup are natural in origin but added in use, and the term *free sugars* exists precisely because the natural-versus-added line does not track the health question cleanly. Explaining why the definitions disagree is a stronger paper than reporting one of them, since the disagreement is the reason label reading is a skill rather than a lookup.
For step two, the practical skill is recognising the vocabulary. Added sugars appear as syrups (corn, high-fructose corn, malt, rice, golden, cane), as words ending in -ose (sucrose, dextrose, maltose, fructose, glucose), as juice concentrates and fruit purees, as molasses, treacle, agave, honey and caramel, and as terms like evaporated cane juice, invert sugar and dextrin. Build that list before you start reading labels, because working from memory is how students find three of the seven added sugars in a product. Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight, so note where each sugar sits — a product with four different sugars scattered down the list may carry more total added sugar than one with a single sugar near the top, and saying so demonstrates you understand what the ordering means. Check for sugar alcohols and non-nutritive sweeteners as well, and say explicitly that you are excluding them, because a marker cannot tell a deliberate exclusion from a miss.
Choosing the five foods deliberately makes the assignment far more interesting than choosing them at random. The obvious candidates — confectionery, soft drinks — will each show one or two sugars and prove nothing a reader did not expect. The informative choices are products marketed as healthy or savoury: a pasta sauce, a bread, a salad dressing, a breakfast cereal, a flavoured yoghurt. Those are where multiple added sugars under different names actually appear, and where the exercise's point lands. Mixing two obvious products with three unexpected ones gives you a comparison rather than a list. Say why you chose each product in a line, because a selection with a stated rationale reads as a small study and an unexplained one reads as whatever was in the cupboard. Buying products from different aisles rather than one is the simplest way to get that spread, since a selection drawn from a single category tends to share both its ingredients and its marketing.
The presentation requirements are light but specific. The brief permits pictures of the food labels and asks you to *highlight* the added sugars within the ingredient list — so the expected artefact is the transcribed or photographed list with the added sugars visibly marked, not a summary of how many each product contained. Keep the ingredient lists complete rather than excerpted, since the surrounding ingredients are what make a sugar's position meaningful. Label each product clearly. Where a label's Nutrition Facts panel declares added sugars separately, note whether that figure matches what you found in the ingredient list, because the two are compiled differently and any discrepancy is worth a sentence. Photograph the panel and the ingredient list together where the packaging allows, since the two appear on the same label and reproducing them side by side is easier for a reader to check.
The scale is modest — one page for step one plus the five labelled products — so resist the urge to write a paper about sugar and health. The brief asks for the difference between the two kinds of sugar, not for their metabolic effects, and a page spent on obesity is a page not spent on the definitional work the assignment is actually testing. One or two sentences connecting the distinction to why it matters is enough context. Cite the source of whichever definition you adopt, since several bodies define these terms slightly differently and naming yours is what makes the classifications in step two checkable. Say which country's labelling rules apply too, because ingredient naming and the presence of an added-sugars declaration both vary and a classification is only defensible against a stated standard.
