Hiring criteria, then an honest self-assessment
Answer the first half as a manager writing a job description rather than as a student listing technologies, which means grouping the skills and saying what each is for. Data management and analysis — query languages, data quality work, reporting tools — because most of the value an informatics hire delivers is turning stored data into something a clinician or an executive can act on. Interoperability and standards, since exchange is where health IT actually breaks: message and document standards, terminology systems, and the interface work between them. Security and privacy, which is regulatory as much as technical. Systems analysis and workflow, because a system that is technically correct and clinically unusable has failed. And clinical literacy, which is the one that separates a good health informatics hire from a good general IT hire: someone who understands what an order set is for will design a better one.
Then the self-assessment, and the useful discipline is to name a weakness with the same specificity as a strength. Most organisations are strong where they have invested and audited — usually security controls and core system uptime, because both are externally scrutinised. The common weak areas are less visible: interoperability with outside organisations, analytics capability that stops at descriptive reporting and never reaches prediction or evaluation, workflow design done at implementation and never revisited, and data quality, where documented values are trusted for analysis without anyone checking how they were entered. Pick one you have actually seen and describe its consequence — a report nobody trusts, an outside record that arrives as a scanned image, an alert everyone overrides. That consequence is what makes the answer credible, and it connects back to the hiring question, since the skill you would hire for should be the gap you just named.
