Three health care market research projects
The three projects look alike and are not: one is an epidemiological estimate, one is a service quality audit, and one is a stakeholder attitude study. Each needs a different method and reaches a different audience.

Three projects, three different research problems
The three projects share a scenario and nothing else, so resist a single template. The first is an epidemiological estimate: how many men aged 35 to 60 in the catchment have some form of sexual dysfunction. That is answered by applying published prevalence rates to census data for the area, not by surveying — men do not volunteer this, and a survey would under-count in a way you could not correct. The second is a service quality audit of billing and admitting, which is answered by direct observation, mystery shopping, call recording review and short post-encounter surveys, because the object is observable behaviour and the informants are available. The third is a stakeholder attitude study: what concerns physicians have about joining a managed care panel is answered by qualitative interviews or focus groups, since you do not yet know what the concerns are and a questionnaire would only test your guesses.
Then answer the two things the report actually asks. Communication to each market segment means naming who the segment is and how you would reach them: for the first, the community and referring primary care physicians, through discreet channels since the topic is stigmatised; for the second, patients and the staff whose behaviour is under review, where internal communication decides whether the audit is received as improvement or surveillance; for the third, physicians who are being courted rather than instructed. And the public relationship question: each project improves the hospital's standing differently — the first by demonstrating that a service was designed around a documented need, the second by acting on how people are treated at the desk rather than only in the clinic, and the third by showing that physicians' concerns changed something. Support each position with scholarly references, as the assignment requires, across three to four pages.
Likely learning objectives
Inferred from the brief — check these against your own rubric.
- 01Match a research method to the nature of each question rather than applying one design.
- 02Identify the market segment each project speaks to.
- 03Anticipate how an internal audit is received by the staff it examines.
- 04Connect each project to a specific improvement in public relationship.

Course-wide instructions that accompany this question
You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes. Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages. Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor. The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.
Turn the brief into deliverables
- 01A 3-4 page report covering all three projects.
- 02A method appropriate to each project, with justification.
- 03The market segment and communication approach for each.
- 04An account of how each improves the hospital's public relationship.
- 05A critique of scholarly literature supporting a position on each.
Each project's method, audience and public benefit
Project one as an estimate
Apply published prevalence to local demographics rather than surveying.
Project two as an audit
Propose observation, mystery shopping and post-encounter survey.
Project three as an attitude study
Propose qualitative interviews or focus groups to surface unknown concerns.
Segments and communication
Name each audience and how the project is communicated to it.
Public relationship benefit
Say what each project changes about how the hospital is regarded.

Recommended databases
- PubMed Central
- NCBI Bookshelf
- Health services research journals
- Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality patient experience resources
Search sequence
- 1.Find published prevalence figures for the first project, since that is the method rather than a survey.
- 2.Look for patient experience measurement instruments for the second, which are already validated.
- 3.Search for qualitative studies of physician participation decisions, which model the third project.
- 4.For each, find one paper you can critique rather than only cite, since the assignment asks for critique.

Review before submission
Common mistakes
- Proposing a survey for all three when only one is a survey problem.
- Surveying men directly about sexual dysfunction, which under-counts and cannot be corrected.
- Using a structured questionnaire for the physician study before knowing what the concerns are.
- Treating staff as objects of the audit rather than as an audience for it.
- Describing the projects without critiquing literature, which the assignment requires.
Submission checklist
- Does each project have a method suited to its own question?
- Have you named the market segment for each?
- Is the stigma issue addressed in the first project's communication plan?
- Have you said how staff should hear about the second project?
- Is there scholarly literature supporting a position on each?
