Integrating theory and research in one chronology
The instruction that decides the grade is the one about integration: your timeline should integrate both theory and research development within the same time frame. Those are two distinct strands. Theory development is the work of Nightingale, Peplau, Henderson, Orem, Roy, Watson and Benner — accounts of what nursing is and what it is for. Research development is the parallel growth of method and infrastructure: the first nursing journals, doctoral programmes, federal funding, the establishment of the National Institute of Nursing Research, and the arrival of evidence-based practice. A timeline that runs one strand and then the other has not integrated anything. Run them together chronologically and, at each period, say how they interacted — theory generating questions research could test, research findings forcing theory to change, which is the relationship the assignment is really asking you to demonstrate rather than merely assert, and it is what separates an integrated timeline from a dated list.
The word count is tight for the span, so periodise rather than enumerate. Four or five eras with a clear character each will read better than twenty dated entries: Nightingale's foundation of systematic observation and statistics; a long slow period up to the 1950s when nursing education moved toward universities; the acceleration from the 1950s onward as graduate programmes and journals appeared and the grand theories were written; the shift from the 1970s toward clinical practice problems; and the contemporary period of evidence-based practice, systematic review and federally funded research. For each era, name the individuals who matter and say what changed because of them, rather than listing who was active. The brief also directs you to the Timeline of Scientific Knowledge in Nursing Writing Guide and to specific chapters, and asks that the content come from those chapters, so build from them first and use anything else only to fill gaps.
Likely learning objectives
Inferred from the brief — check these against your own rubric.
- 01Distinguish nursing theory development from nursing research development.
- 02Trace both strands chronologically within a single timeline.
- 03Explain how theory and research development influenced each other.
- 04Identify the individuals whose work marked each period and what changed because of it.
- 05Periodise a long history to fit a constrained word count.

Turn the brief into deliverables
- 01A 1,100-word chronological timeline in APA format.
- 02Key events in the development of scientific nursing knowledge.
- 03Key individuals and what each changed.
- 04Theory development and research development integrated in the same time frame.
- 05References for all sources cited, drawn from the assigned chapters.
Foundations, formalisation, acceleration, present
Nightingale and systematic observation
The foundation of both strands in statistics and in a theory of nursing's purpose.
Slow growth to the 1950s
Education moving into universities and the first research infrastructure.
Acceleration: theory and method together
Graduate programmes, journals and the writing of the grand theories.
The turn to clinical practice
Research refocusing on practice problems from the 1970s onward.
Evidence-based practice and federal funding
NINR, systematic review and the contemporary research enterprise.

Recommended databases
- Theoretical Basis for Nursing, chapters 1-2
- Nursing Research, chapter 1
- The supplied Timeline of Scientific Knowledge in Nursing Writing Guide
- National Institute of Nursing Research
- CINAHL
Search sequence
- 1.Read the assigned chapters and extract two lists: theorists and research milestones.
- 2.Place both lists on one chronological axis and look for where they interact.
- 3.Decide on four or five periods before writing anything.
- 4.For each named individual, identify the specific change their work produced.
- 5.Check the writing guide for the required timeline format.
Reference shortlist
These are authoritative starting points, not a ready-made bibliography. A qualified reviewer must confirm that each source fits the assignment and supports the claim beside which it is cited.
Nothing here is cleared for citation until you have read it.

Review before submission
Common mistakes
- Presenting theory history and research history as two separate sequences.
- Listing dated entries until the word count runs out instead of periodising.
- Naming theorists without saying what their work changed.
- Stopping at Nightingale and the grand theorists, omitting research infrastructure.
- Ignoring the supplied writing guide and the assigned chapters.
- Omitting the contemporary evidence-based practice period entirely.
Submission checklist
- The timeline is chronological and reaches the present.
- Both theory and research development appear in each period.
- Their interaction is stated, not just their coexistence.
- Named individuals are tied to specific changes.
- The word count is close to 1,100 words.
- APA formatting and references are correct, using the assigned chapters.
