Synthesis means finding the disagreements
The word that decides this paper is synthesis, and the deliverable spells out what it means here: point out inconsistencies and contradictions in the literature, and offer possible explanations for them. A paper that summarises five studies in turn has not started.
Summary and synthesis produce papers of the same length and different value. A summary is organised by study — this one found X, that one found Y — and can be written without ever putting two articles in the same sentence. A synthesis is organised by finding, and its paragraphs are about points of agreement and disagreement across the set. The brief removes the ambiguity by naming the output: inconsistencies, contradictions, and explanations for them. So before drafting, sort the five studies by what they concluded rather than by author, and look for the places where they do not line up. If they all agree, that is worth saying and worth being suspicious of, because five agreeing studies on a contested clinical question usually means the search was too narrow rather than the question settled.
Offering explanations for inconsistency is the part that separates grades, and the explanations are usually structural rather than mysterious. Two studies disagree because their populations differ, because one measured at six weeks and the other at twelve, because the outcome was self-reported in one and observed in the other, because the sample sizes differ by an order of magnitude, or because the settings were not comparable. Naming the specific difference is the answer; saying that further research is needed is not. The summary table is where you find these, which is the real reason the table is a deliverable rather than busywork — laid out side by side, design, population, sample size, measure and timing become directly comparable in a way five prose paragraphs never are. Do that work in the table and the prose almost writes itself; do it in prose and you will end up summarising after all.
The brief asks for at least one systematic review and one integrative review, if possible, and those two are not interchangeable. A systematic review answers a narrow question with a prespecified, reproducible method and usually restricts itself to one kind of design. An integrative review deliberately combines methodologies, which is why nursing uses it so heavily: it can bring qualitative accounts of how something is experienced alongside trial data about whether it works. Saying which of the two you found, and what each contributes that the primary studies cannot, is a cheap way to show you know why the brief asked for both. If you could not find one, say so and say what you searched — the phrase 'if possible' makes that an acceptable answer and silence an unacceptable one. Naming which is which also protects the conclusion, since a systematic review carries weight a single cohort study does not.
Then there is a paragraph most students read as reassurance and should read as an instruction. The brief says the conclusion should be considered preliminary, that five studies are typically not enough to reflect the full range of knowledge, and that you are not expected to conduct a comprehensive methodological evaluation. That is permission to write a hedged conclusion, and it is also a requirement to hedge it. The deliverable asks whether the evidence provides strong support for a change in practice or whether further research is needed — a genuine either-or. Choosing the first on five studies, without naming what would have to be true for it to hold, is the answer that ignores the paragraph. Choosing the second while saying exactly what is missing is the answer that uses it. Hedging well is a skill being assessed here, not a way of avoiding one.

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes. Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages. Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor. The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.

Common mistakes
- Writing five paragraphs, one per study, which is a summary rather than the synthesis the brief asks for.
