PICOT synthesis paragraph: exercise therapy and depression
A single synthesis paragraph drawing on at least two articles supporting a PICOT question, written without reviewing each study separately. This guide gives the grammatical test that distinguishes synthesis from summary and the matrix that makes it mechanical.

One clause that rules out the paragraph you were going to write
One paragraph, and the entire assignment lives in a single subordinate clause: *without separately reviewing each of the studies in the paragraph*. That clause forbids the shape almost everyone writes. Smith found this. Jones found that. Both support my PICOT question. Three sentences, each owned by one source, is a summary with the sources laid end to end, and it is precisely what has been ruled out. The brief is short enough that the constraint is easy to read past, and long enough that there is no ambiguity about it. Read the sentence twice before drafting, because everything else here — the citations, the length, the paraphrasing — is standard, and this one requirement is not. It is also the only sentence in the brief that tells you something you would not have guessed, which is a reliable sign of where the marks are.
The operational difference is what the paragraph is organised by. A summary is organised by source; a synthesis is organised by claim. There is a mechanical test that settles it in ten seconds: look at how your sentences begin. If they start with an author name as the grammatical subject — *Schuch et al. (2016) found* — the source is driving the sentence and you are summarising. If they start with the finding — *aerobic exercise produces clinically meaningful reductions in depressive symptoms* — and the citations sit at the end, the claim is driving the sentence and the sources are supporting it. Rewriting a summary into a synthesis is very often just that grammatical inversion, applied sentence by sentence. Apply the test to your draft before submitting; it takes a minute and it catches the failure the whole assignment is designed around.
A two-column matrix built before you write makes this almost automatic. List the claims down the left — what both studies establish, where they diverge, what neither addresses — and put a tick against each study that supports each claim. The rows then become your sentences, and a row supported by two studies produces exactly the sentence the assignment wants, with two citations at the end of one claim. It also surfaces the interesting material fast, because the rows with only one tick are the disagreements and the empty spaces are the gaps. Papers that skip this step tend to synthesise only the agreement, which produces a bland paragraph that could have been written from either article alone. Ten minutes with a matrix reliably saves more than that in redrafting, because a paragraph organised the wrong way usually has to be rewritten rather than edited.
What you synthesise on is agreement, disagreement and absence, and all three earn more than agreement does by itself. Two studies supporting the same question will still differ somewhere — in the population sampled, the effect size reported, the comparison condition, the design quality, or what counted as an outcome. Naming the convergence in one sentence and the divergence in the next is the whole shape of a synthesis paragraph. And the absence is often the most valuable line available to you, because if neither study made the head-to-head comparison your own PICOT specifies, that gap is the reason your question is worth asking rather than a weakness in your evidence. Say what the divergence implies as well as that it exists, since an unexplained disagreement between two studies reads as a reporting problem rather than an analytical one.
On mechanics: a paragraph is five to eight sentences, so this is roughly 150 to 200 words and every sentence has to do work. Paraphrase throughout — the instruction says so explicitly, and a quotation inside a paragraph this short would consume a fifth of it while adding nothing you could not say more briefly. Cite in the style your course requires, with citations attached to claims rather than to sentences that announce authors. Introduce no sources beyond the supporting articles you have appraised. And close on your own question: the last sentence should say what the combined evidence licenses about your population, intervention, comparison, outcome and timeframe specifically. A paragraph that ends on your own question also demonstrates the thing this whole exercise exists to teach, which is that evidence is gathered in order to answer something specific.

Search sequence
- 1.Reread the two articles specifically for points of disagreement, since the agreement will already be obvious.
- 2.Note the population of each study and check whether either matches the P in your own question.
- 3.Record what each study used as its outcome measure, because different instruments are a common and citable divergence.
- 4.Check whether either study made the head-to-head comparison your C specifies; if neither did, that is your gap sentence.

These are authoritative starting points, not a ready-made bibliography. A qualified reviewer must confirm that each source fits the assignment and supports the claim beside which it is cited.
