Four questions, four different competencies
Four questions, each with a 130-word floor, and each labelled with the competency it is assessing — Critical Thinking, Visual and Quantitative Analysis, Written Communication Skills, Social Responsibility. Those labels are not decoration. They tell you what each answer is being marked on, and they explain why the questions are so different in kind: one is about research method, one is about reading charts, one is about describing a study accurately, and one is about drawing civic implications from a claim. Write each answer to its own label. An answer to Question 2 that is beautifully argued but never touches a graph has answered the wrong competency, and the 130-word minimum means there is no room to cover the others as well. Treat the four as four separate short essays that happen to share a source article.
Question 1 asks you to *identify three research methods used to accumulate the data* and give one strength and one weakness of each — six specific claims, and the marks are in the specificity. Popular-science features typically draw on several kinds of evidence at once: laboratory experiments, brain imaging, large-scale surveys, longitudinal cohort data, and sometimes single case studies or ethnographic observation. Name the ones the article actually used rather than the ones you know about. Strengths and weaknesses should be about inference, not logistics: an experiment supports causal claims but usually in an artificial setting; a survey reaches scale but relies on self-report; imaging shows what the brain is doing but not why, and correlational designs cannot establish direction. If the article describes a study without naming its design, say what design its description implies and mark that you have inferred it, which is a more honest answer than guessing confidently.
Question 2 is the one most often underestimated. *Draw three conclusions that can be deduced from the infographs, bar graphs or pie charts* — deduced, so each conclusion has to be supportable from the figure alone rather than from the surrounding prose. Then it asks for a prediction about the future, supported with reasons and details, which is an inference beyond the data and should be flagged as such. Read the axes before the bars: check whether the vertical axis starts at zero, what the units are, what time span is covered, and whether a pie chart's slices sum to a whole. Naming one thing the chart cannot tell you is often the single strongest sentence in this answer, because it demonstrates the quantitative literacy the competency label is testing. Note also that the question asks for conclusions in the plural from figures in the plural, so spreading the three across different charts is safer than mining one.
Question 3 is a comprehension and description task on one named study — Lieberman and Morelli — and it wants the *physiological and psychological* processes kept apart. The physiological side is what happens in the body and brain: the regions recruited when a person shares another's emotional state, the distinction between the affective sharing system and the mentalizing system used to reason about another mind, and the measurable responses those produce. The psychological side is what the person is doing: attending to another, taking their perspective, experiencing a matched emotion, and then acting on it. The instruction to *elaborate fully with ample description and details* is a direct signal that a summary sentence will not clear the bar, so give the mechanism rather than the finding. Naming the two systems separately also gives the answer a structure, which matters when the competency being assessed is written communication rather than content knowledge.
Question 4 turns a quotation into an argument. Morelli's claim that being distracted reduces empathy and blunts the brain's response has civic implications precisely because civic life runs on attention: deliberation, volunteering, jury service, listening to a neighbour with a different view. Three implications, each developed — for example, that attention is a precondition for the empathy that civic participation depends on; that environments engineered to fragment attention therefore have a political cost, not only a personal one; and that interventions which protect sustained attention are civic interventions. The brief also warns that submissions are checked for plagiarism, so the quotation must be marked as a quotation and everything around it must be in your own words. Keep the three implications at different scales — one personal, one institutional, one political — because three versions of the same point read as one implication padded out.
