Capstone literature review: comparing across studies

Every required section is a comparison, which means the paper is organised across studies rather than through them. An article-by-article summary satisfies none of the headings the brief names.

01

A comparison paper, not a summary of sources

Look at what the required sections actually ask for: a comparison of research questions, a comparison of sample populations, a comparison of the limitations of the study. All three are comparisons, and that single word decides the organisation of the whole paper. The default structure students reach for — one paragraph per article, each summarising a study — cannot produce any of them, because a summary runs through studies one at a time while a comparison runs across them, and the two organisations answer different questions entirely. Organise by dimension instead: one section discussing how the research questions relate to each other and to your PICOT, one discussing who was actually studied, one discussing what the studies could not establish. The same evidence appears, arranged so the required headings are answerable. Deciding this before you write saves rewriting the whole paper later, because the two structures share almost no sentences.

The sample population comparison is where the real analytical value sits, and it is usually the thinnest section. What matters is not the sample sizes but whether those populations resemble the one your intervention will meet — age, comorbidity, acuity, setting, country and health system. A trial conducted in a well-resourced academic centre may not transfer to a community clinic, and saying so is exactly the judgement a capstone is meant to demonstrate. Treat the limitations section the same way: not a list of what each author confessed, but what the body of evidence collectively cannot tell you, and therefore what remains uncertain for your project. That framing also makes the recommendations for further research write themselves, because a recommendation should name a gap you have already demonstrated rather than a topic you find interesting. That link is also the easiest thing for a marker to check, so it is worth making explicit rather than leaving implied.

Likely learning objectives

Inferred from the brief — check these against your own rubric.

  • 01
Organise a literature review by dimension of comparison rather than by article.
  • 02
Assess whether study populations transfer to the setting of a proposed intervention.
  • 03
Derive research recommendations from demonstrated gaps in the evidence.

While the implementation plan prepares students to apply their research to the problem or issue they have identified for their capstone change proposal project, the literature review enables students to map out and move into the active planning and development stages of the project. A literature review analyzes how current research supports the PICOT, as well as identifies what is known and what is not known in the evidence. Students will use the information from the earlier PICOT Statement Paper and Literature Evaluation Table assignments to develop a 750-1,000 word review that includes the following sections: Title page Introduction section A comparison of research questions A comparison of sample populations A comparison of the limitations of the study A conclusion section, incorporating recommendations for further research Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required. This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion. You are required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite. Please refer to the directions in the Student Success Center.
Course-wide instructions that accompany this question

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes. Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages. Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor. The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument

02

Turn the brief into deliverables

  1. 01
A 750-1,000 word review with all required sections.
  2. 02
Three genuine comparisons rather than three sets of summaries.
  3. 03
A conclusion whose recommendations follow from the limitations discussed.
  4. 04
APA formatting throughout, with no abstract.
03

Four comparisons across the required sections

01

Introduction and PICOT

State the practice problem and the PICOT question the review serves.

02

Comparison of research questions

Relate the studies' questions to each other and to your PICOT, noting where they diverge.

03

Comparison of sample populations

Compare who was studied and assess transferability to your intervention setting.

04

Comparison of limitations

Identify what the body of evidence collectively cannot establish.

05

Conclusion and recommendations

Draw recommendations that name the gaps demonstrated above.

04

Reusing your PICOT and evaluation table

Recommended databases

  • CINAHL
  • PubMed
  • Cochrane Library
  • Your earlier Literature Evaluation Table
  • Joanna Briggs Institute

Search sequence

  1. 1.
Start from your own evaluation table — the studies are already selected and appraised, and reusing them is what the brief intends.
  2. 2.
Re-read each study's methods for population characteristics, since that is the section you are most likely to have skimmed.
  3. 3.
Check whether any study has been superseded or retracted before building a recommendation on it.
  4. 4.
Keep the search documented; a capstone reviewer may ask how the studies were chosen.
05

Reference shortlist

These are authoritative starting points, not a ready-made bibliography. A qualified reviewer must confirm that each source fits the assignment and supports the claim beside which it is cited.

Nothing here is cleared for citation until you have read it.

    About CAHPS

Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, 28(8), 1632-1641 · 2021

  3. 03

    JMIR Medical Informatics · 2022

A deliberately contrasting setting, which makes the transferability question concrete when compared with a US study.

  4. 04

    StatPearls, NCBI Bookshelf · 2023

Reference for reading precision and uncertainty correctly when comparing what studies could and could not establish.

06

Review before submission

Common mistakes

  • Structuring the paper one article at a time, which makes the required comparisons impossible.
  • Comparing sample sizes instead of sample characteristics and transferability.
  • Listing each study's stated limitations rather than what the evidence collectively cannot show.
  • Recommending research that does not follow from any gap the paper demonstrated.

Submission checklist

  • Is each required section genuinely a comparison across studies?
  • Does the sample section address transferability to your setting?
  • Do the recommendations trace back to a limitation you identified?
  • Is the paper within 750-1,000 words in APA format with no abstract?
