Why does the brief ask for the hypothesis "in your own words"?
This is a research-methods assignment wearing a music-and-intelligence costume, and every question is about the process rather than the phenomenon. You are asked to state the hypothesis in your own words, name the independent and dependent variables, identify controlled variables and say why control was necessary, judge whether the evidence is empirical and valid, and assess whether the explanation the authors offer is justified by what they found. None of that requires an opinion about Mozart. It requires you to read a short report the way a methodologist reads one, and the grading criteria confirm it: the largest single allocation, twenty points, goes to suggesting two modifications that would make the results more generalisable, which is a design question and nothing else.
The first practical shock is the source itself. Rauscher, Shaw and Ky 1993 is a one-page Scientific Correspondence item in Nature, not a full research article, and students who expect an introduction, method, results and discussion cannot find them. There is no stated hypothesis to quote, which is precisely why the question says "in your own words" — you have to reconstruct it from the design. Similarly, the variables are inferable rather than labelled: the manipulation was the listening condition each participant experienced before testing, and the measured outcome was performance on spatial-temporal tasks from a standard intelligence scale, expressed as a temporary score change. Read the piece twice before writing anything, and treat its brevity as information about the strength of the evidence rather than as an obstacle.
The second half of the assignment exists because of the gap between what the paper claimed and what the world heard. The 1993 report described a small, short-lived improvement on one narrow class of spatial task in college students. The popular Mozart effect — that playing Mozart to infants makes them permanently more intelligent — is not in the paper at all, and Jenkins's 2001 review is the corrective the brief pairs it with. Your three reasons for or against merit should engage the actual claim, not the myth: sample size, the absence of a stated control for baseline spatial ability, the duration of the effect, and the difficulty of separating music from arousal and mood. The individual-differences question is asking whether the design could distinguish people who were already better at spatial tasks from an effect of the music, and the honest answer shapes both modifications you propose.
