How should you choose the disease?
Part B is the graded core and its five sub-parts are progressively less about the disease and more about your own community, which is the movement a strong submission makes visible. Parts one and two are epidemiology, part three is systems, and parts four and five are local practice. Choose your disease with that arc in mind: measles, tuberculosis and Ebola all have well-documented cross-border outbreaks with clear dates and named countries, while a disease you know clinically but cannot pin to a specific outbreak will fail part B's opening requirement. The description asks for the name, the countries involved, the date the outbreak was discovered and the dates it reached each country — four separate facts, all checkable, so build a small table before writing and cite the source for each date. Outbreak dates are the single easiest thing in this task for a marker to verify, and the easiest to get wrong from memory.
The determinants question is where most submissions lose marks, by producing a general risk factor list that would fit any infectious disease in any country. Epidemiological determinants and risk factors means the specific conditions that let this outbreak grow: population immunity and vaccination coverage, population movement and the specific travel or trade routes involved, health system capacity and surveillance quality in the origin country, living density, water and sanitation, burial or care practices where relevant, and the delay between first case and first detection. Keep this separate from the transmission route, which is a mechanism — droplet, airborne, direct contact with bodily fluids, faecal-oral, vector-borne, bloodborne — with the incubation period and infectious period attached, since those are what make an outbreak controllable or not. A disease infectious before symptoms appear needs an entirely different containment strategy from one that is not, and saying so connects this section to part five.
Parts four and five cannot be answered from a textbook. The reporting protocol is jurisdiction-specific and factual: which conditions are notifiable in your state, who reports, to whom, within what timeframe, and how that escalates to the state health department, then to the national level, then internationally under the International Health Regulations. Name your actual state agency and the timeframe it specifies, because a generic answer here is indistinguishable from one written without opening a single local document. Then the two prevention strategies must be strategies rather than aspirations, each with the audience named, the mechanism, who delivers it and how you would know it worked — a school-based catch-up immunisation clinic with coverage as the measure beats raise community awareness by a wide margin. Remember part C is a separate deliverable, a PDF score summary covering all four named simulation activities, and a submission missing it is returned as incomplete no matter how good the paper is.
