What does the variable comparison actually test?
The three definitions take a paragraph and everybody gets them right, so the marks are not there. What separates posts is whether you understand that these are roles a variable plays in a particular study, not properties a variable owns. Age is an independent variable in a study of ageing, a dependent variable in a study of what predicts biological age, and an extraneous variable in a study of a drug's effect on blood pressure. Write the definitions with that framing and you have already said something most of the class will not. The practical test is simple: name one concrete variable and show it occupying all three roles across three different studies, because that single example demonstrates the concept more convincingly than three careful definitions ever could. Doing that in the first paragraph also disposes of the risk that your post reads as three dictionary entries, which is what the majority of a thread on this topic will look like.
The second thing worth getting straight is that extraneous and confounding are not synonyms, and the sloppy use of one for the other is the commonest error in this topic. An extraneous variable is anything outside the research question that could affect the dependent variable. It becomes a confounder only when it is also associated with the independent variable, because that is the condition under which it can produce a spurious relationship rather than merely adding noise. The distinction matters practically: extraneous variables that are unrelated to the independent variable reduce your power by inflating error variance, while confounders bias your estimate and can invent a relationship that is not there. Say which problem each of your control strategies is solving. Get this right and the rest of the post writes itself, because each control method can then be introduced as an answer to one problem or the other rather than as a general good practice.
The prompt asks for two control methods, not a survey, so choose two that work differently and explain the mechanism rather than naming the technique. Randomisation distributes all extraneous variables, measured and unmeasured, across conditions in expectation, which is why it is the only method that handles variables you have not thought of. Matching, restriction and homogeneous sampling remove the variable's variation by design, which works completely but only for variables you specified in advance. Statistical control through analysis of covariance or regression adjustment removes variance attributable to a measured covariate after the fact. Blinding and counterbalancing address extraneous influences that arise from the procedure itself rather than from the participants. Pick two, and say how each actually achieves its effect. Choosing two methods that share a mechanism, such as matching and restriction, wastes half the assignment, because you will end up writing the same explanation twice under two different headings.
Every control method has a cost, and naming the cost is what turns a description into an argument. Randomisation only works in expectation, so with small samples an important variable can still be unevenly distributed by chance, and randomisation is often unavailable for practical or ethical reasons. Restriction buys internal validity by narrowing the population, so the finding may not generalise beyond the group you restricted to. Matching becomes difficult with more than a few variables and can discard large numbers of participants. Statistical adjustment assumes you measured the covariate well and specified its relationship correctly, and it can do nothing about a variable you did not measure. A post that states two methods and two limitations reads as informed rather than recited. Costs are also what your instructor is most likely to raise in the replies, so thinking about them now turns participation into something you can answer.
The requirement for peer-reviewed articles pulls in a direction most students resist, which is toward examples rather than textbook definitions. The strongest way to satisfy it is to find one published study in your own field and describe how its authors handled a specific extraneous variable, naming the variable. Studies of an educational intervention have to deal with prior attainment; clinical trials of a behavioural intervention have to deal with baseline severity and with the attention the intervention group receives; observational studies of exposure and disease have to deal with socioeconomic status, which is associated with almost everything. Citing a real study also gives you something concrete for classmates to react to, which is worth more than a second definition. It also stops the peer-reviewed requirement from becoming an afterthought, where two citations are attached to a definition that nobody would dispute and the article itself is never actually described.
Close by connecting control back to validity, because that is the concept the topic is building toward and it is where the marker will be looking for signs of understanding. Controlling extraneous variables protects internal validity, the claim that the independent variable and not something else produced the change in the dependent variable. Some methods buy that protection with external validity, the claim that the finding applies outside the study. Restriction is the clearest case of the trade. If you can state that tension in a sentence and then say which way you would trade in a study you actually care about, you have written a post that the rest of the thread can argue with rather than agree with, and that is what substantive participation means here. That trade is the reason methods sections read the way they do, and recognising it is the difference between a student who can define control and one who can design a study with it.

Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes. Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages. Compare independent variables Discussion Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor. The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument. ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CLASS Discussion Questions (DQ) Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, include a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words. Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source. One or two sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words. I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses. Weekly Participation Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately. In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies. Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work). Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week. APA Format and Writing Quality Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Use of Direct Quotes I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly. As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content. It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.
