Critiquing validity: quantitative against qualitative

Same topic, two ways of knowing
The two articles must address the same topic and that constraint is doing the analytical work. If they did not, the contrast section would compare two literatures rather than two ways of knowing about one thing, and the assignment's central question would have nothing to bite on. Choose the topic first, then find a quantitative study and a qualitative or mixed methods study that address it, and expect this to be the slowest part of the task. The brief adds two further restrictions worth noting before you search: they must be single studies rather than systematic or integrative reviews, which rules out meta-analyses and metasyntheses, and if you cannot find both types on your portfolio topic you are permitted to change topic. Discovering that after you have completed one template is expensive. Search for both articles before completing either template, since a failed search means a change of topic.
The contrast section is not a summary of the two studies and this is where most submissions go wrong. It asks what different kinds of information you gained, which means comparing what each study can tell you rather than what each found. A quantitative study on medication adherence tells you what proportion adhere, which factors predict adherence and with what confidence, and whether an intervention changed the rate. A qualitative study on the same topic tells you what adherence means to the people doing or not doing it, what reasoning lies behind a decision that looks irrational in the numbers, and what the categories in the quantitative instrument miss. Write the comparison at that level and use examples from your two articles as evidence, which the brief asks for explicitly. Say what each study could not have told you, which is often clearer than saying what it did.
The advantages and disadvantages should be framed as trade-offs rather than as lists, because every strength has a corresponding cost. Quantitative work buys precision, comparability and the possibility of causal inference through design, at the cost of measuring only what was decided in advance and losing the meaning behind the variables. Qualitative work buys depth, access to process and the ability to discover what the researcher did not think to ask, at the cost of small samples, findings that transfer rather than generalise, and greater dependence on the analyst's judgement. Mixed methods buys both at the cost of complexity, and if your second article is mixed methods you should say what the integration actually achieved, since many mixed methods papers report two studies side by side without integrating anything. Naming the cost alongside the benefit is what turns a list into an argument. Say which trade-off matters most for your topic.
The question about whether qualitative research is real science is the most interesting part and deserves a proper answer rather than a defensive one. The strongest response does not claim qualitative work is really quantitative in disguise. It points out that the objection assumes science means hypothesis testing with numerical measurement, which is a description of some sciences and not others, and that the rigour criteria for qualitative work are different rather than absent: credibility, dependability, confirmability and transferability, established through audit trails, member checking, negative case analysis, reflexivity about the researcher's position and independent coding. Then make the practical point: qualitative work is often what makes quantitative work possible, because someone has to establish what the relevant variables are before anyone can measure them. That last point is the one that most often changes a sceptical readers mind. It reframes the objection instead of resisting it.
On execution, the submission requirements are specific and easy to lose marks on. Use the appropriate template for each study type, since there are separate ones for qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods and using the wrong one will show. Combine both completed templates and the narrative into a single Word document, in that structure. The school requires a title page, an introduction, a summary and references in every paper, so include all four even though the templates dominate the page count. Keep the narrative to two to three pages and support the response to the real science claim with references to the learning resources and other credible sources rather than with assertion, since that section is the one most likely to slip into opinion.
