Three elements, then one of them carried further

The three elements the question wants are the ones a chromosome cannot be inherited without: the centromere, which is where the kinetochore assembles so spindle fibres can pull sister chromatids apart at cell division; the telomeres, the repetitive caps at each end that protect the chromosome from degradation and from being read as a double-strand break needing repair; and the origins of replication, the sequences where replication machinery loads so a large linear molecule can be copied from many points at once rather than end to end. State each with its function rather than as a label, because the functions are what the second half of the question needs. If your reading names them differently, say which framework you are using and keep going; the marker is looking for structural elements that are functionally necessary rather than for an inventory of everything a chromosome contains. That is the test the word essential is applying.

Then take one element into the implications, and telomeres are the obvious choice because they connect the structural fact to something clinical. Telomeres shorten with each division because the lagging strand cannot be completed to the very end, which places a replicative limit on somatic cells and links directly to cellular senescence and ageing. That is the life span half of the question. On research, telomere length is being examined as a biomarker of biological rather than chronological age and as an outcome in studies of chronic stress and socioeconomic adversity. On health, telomerase reactivation is a hallmark of many cancers, which is the same mechanism read in the other direction. One element carried through all three domains is a far stronger post than three elements each given a sentence of significance, and it is also the only version that answers the question the prompt actually asked.
