Argue for the method against the alternatives, not in isolation
Start from what quality improvement actually requires, because the method follows from the question rather than the other way round. Quality improvement asks whether a change produced a measurable difference in a defined outcome for a defined population, within a defined period. That question has a numeric answer, needs a pre-intervention baseline to compare against, and has to be reportable to people who will decide whether to keep the change. A quantitative method supplies exactly those: an operationally defined outcome measure, a comparison across time, and a result that can be stated as a magnitude rather than as an impression. Say that explicitly and you have the rationale. Then honour the contrast the prompt asks for: qualitative work would tell you why staff did or did not adopt the change and what the experience was like, which is genuinely valuable and is not the question a DPI project asks.
Mixed methods deserves its own sentence rather than a dismissal, since it is the strongest rival. A mixed design would answer both the whether and the why, and the honest reason for not using one in this context is feasibility rather than superiority: a doctoral project on a short timeline with one investigator cannot usually do both well, and a weak qualitative strand attached to a quantitative core adds length rather than knowledge. Then close on the alignment with quality improvement and be precise about the boundary, because the next topic in this course is exactly that distinction. Quality improvement applies existing evidence to a local setting to improve care there, while research generates new generalisable knowledge. The methods overlap heavily; the intent and the claim do not, and the claim you make at the end is what decides which activity you were doing. Say which side your own project sits on.
