What does free writing a variable list involve?

The instruction says free write, and it means it — this week's work is generative rather than polished, so the failure mode is starting too tidy and listing three variables you already knew about. Write down everything that could plausibly vary in your study before you judge any of it: characteristics of the individuals, of the groups they belong to, of the settings they are in, and of the systems around them. The brief's own definition points at all four levels, and the useful move is to sweep each in turn. Individual characteristics are the easiest and the ones everyone remembers; environmental and system-level variables are where a list becomes distinctive, and they are usually the ones that turn out to be doing the explaining once the data arrive. Staffing ratios, unit culture, distance to the nearest clinic, insurance status and referral pathways all belong on the sweep even if none of them survives the cut.

Once the list exists, sort it, because an unsorted list cannot narrow anything. The standard sort is by role: which variable is the outcome you care about, which are the exposures or interventions you think move it, which are confounders that affect both and would mislead you if ignored, and which are simply descriptors of your sample. Two further distinctions decide how hard your study will be. Some variables are straightforward and directly measurable — age, dose, length of stay, readmission within thirty days — while others are constructs that need an instrument before they can be measured at all, such as socioeconomic status, health literacy, burnout, or attitude toward a treatment. A construct with no chosen instrument is not yet a variable in any usable sense, so flag each one and note whether a validated tool already exists for it. That check often does the narrowing for you.

The last three questions in the prompt are one question asked three ways, and the answer they want is a decision. Narrowing means committing: naming the one or two variables of particular interest and saying explicitly what you are setting aside and why. A study that keeps every variable of interest becomes unmeasurable within a semester, and the honest reasons for cutting are worth stating — data will not be available, the measurement burden is too heavy, the effect is outside your framework, or the sample is too small to detect anything. Then check that your research question actually names the variables you kept, because the whole point of the exercise is that a question phrased around specific variables is answerable, whereas one phrased around a topic is not.
