Eight sources inside seven hundred words
Two constraints in this brief pull hard against each other and noticing that is most of the planning. Five hundred to seven hundred and fifty words, six required elements, and a minimum of eight peer-reviewed sources published within the last five years. Eight sources inside seven hundred words means roughly one citation per eighty words, so there is no room for a literature review — the sources have to be woven into the description, the effect and the significance rather than gathered into a section of their own. Work out where each of your eight will sit before you draft, because a paper that reaches its word limit with three sources used and five left over cannot be fixed by adding a paragraph. That density is also the reason to choose a topic with an existing evidence base rather than one you find interesting but that nobody has published on.
The topic choice is constrained twice and both constraints are checkable. It must align to your area of interest *and* to the clinical practice setting where your practice hours are completed, and it must be identified in collaboration with your approved preceptor. That second half is not a formality: a topic your preceptor cannot support is one you will not be able to gather data on or implement anything against in later topics of the course. Pick something you have actually seen go wrong in that setting — a handoff that drops information, a screening that gets skipped, a readmission pattern, an education gap on a specific unit — because a problem you have observed gives you the high level of detail the brief demands. Scope it small enough to be plausible in one setting; a proposal to reduce hospital-wide falls is a topic, but a proposal to change fall risk reassessment on one night shift is a project.
The brief lists five possible kinds of focus — a problem or issue, an intervention, a quality initiative, an educational need, or a collaborative interprofessional team project — and then repeats that list in four of the six required elements. That repetition is a signal: whichever kind you choose, you must carry it consistently through the setting, the description, the effect and the significance. Students who describe a *problem* in one paragraph and an *intervention* in the next end up with a proposal that never says clearly what the project is. Name your category in the first sentence and use the same noun throughout. The choice also determines what evidence you need — a quality initiative wants baseline data, an educational need wants a demonstrated knowledge gap, and an intervention wants comparative effectiveness literature.
The difference between *effect* and *significance* is where most drafts blur. Effect is what the problem currently does — to patients, to staff, to length of stay, to cost, to safety — and it should be quantified wherever your setting or the literature allows. Significance is the argument for why nursing practice specifically should care, which is a broader and more professional claim: what it means for scope of practice, for the nurse's role in the care pathway, for patient outcomes attributable to nursing action. Answering both with the same paragraph costs you one of the two rubric criteria. Keep the effect concrete and local, and let the significance section be where you reach for the wider literature, because that division also spreads your eight sources sensibly across the paper. Where the literature gives you a figure your own setting cannot, cite it as a comparator rather than as your baseline, and say which it is.
The proposed solution is the last required element and it has a specific requirement attached — an explanation of how it will affect nursing practice, not just what it is. So a solution that reads as a purchase order ("implement a new screening tool") has answered half the question. Say what nurses will do differently, when in the workflow it happens, who owns it, and what would count as evidence that it worked. You do not need an implementation plan at this stage — that comes later in the capstone sequence — but the marker is looking for a solution that connects to the problem you described rather than one bolted on at the end. Check that your solution addresses the effect you quantified; a proposal that would not move the number you cited is a proposal aimed at a different problem.
The source requirement is the strictest thing in this brief and it is worth reading precisely: a minimum of eight peer-reviewed sources, published within the last five years. Peer-reviewed excludes the professional press, most guidelines, and organisational reports — which are useful for context but do not count toward eight. The five-year window means checking publication dates rather than assuming, and it is the requirement most likely to be verified. APA style per the Student Success Center guide, no abstract required, submission through LopesWrite, and a twelve-criterion rubric to read before starting. Read that rubric against your outline rather than against your finished draft, since twelve criteria across seven hundred words means almost every paragraph is being scored on something specific. Build the reference list as you draft rather than at the end, since discovering on the final pass that two sources fall outside the window means rewriting whichever paragraphs depended on them.
Required element | The version that loses marks | The version that scores |
|---|---|---|
The focus | Shifts between problem and intervention | One category named and carried throughout |
Setting | 'A hospital' | The specific unit where practice hours are completed |
Description | A general account of the issue | High detail from something actually observed |
Effect | 'It affects patient care' | Quantified — outcomes, time, cost, safety |
Significance | A restatement of the effect | Why nursing practice specifically should act |
Proposed solution | Names a tool to implement | What nurses do differently, and how it is judged |
Preceptor alignment | Not mentioned | A topic the preceptor can actually support |
Sources | Eight, some of them older or not peer-reviewed | Eight peer-reviewed, all within five years |
Likely learning objectives
Inferred from the brief — check these against your own rubric.
- 01Scope a capstone topic to a single observable clinical setting.
- 02Carry one category of focus consistently through every required element.
- 03Distinguish the effect of a problem from its significance for nursing practice.
- 04Distribute eight recent peer-reviewed sources across a short paper.

Important information for writing discussion questions and participation Hi Class, Please read through the following information on writing a Discussion question response and participation posts. Contact me if you have any questions. Important information on Writing a Discussion Question Your response needs to be a minimum of 150 words (not including your list of references) There needs to be at least TWO references with ONE being a peer reviewed professional journal article. Include in-text citations in your response Do not include quotes—instead summarize and paraphrase the information Follow APA-7th edition Points will be deducted if the above is not followed Participation –replies to your classmates or instructor A minimum of 6 responses per week, on at least 3 days of the week. Each response needs at least ONE reference with citations—best if it is a peer reviewed journal article Each response needs to be at least 75 words in length (does not include your list of references) Responses need to be substantive by bringing information to the discussion or further enhance the discussion. Responses of “I agree” or “great post” does not count for the word count. Follow APA 7th edition Points will be deducted if the above is not followed Remember to use and follow APA-7th edition for all weekly assignments, discussion questions, and participation points. Here are some helpful links Student paper example Citing Sources The Writing Center is a great resource Welcome to class Hello class and welcome to the class and I will be your instructor for this course. This is a -week course and requires a lot of time commitment, organization, and a high level of dedication. Please use the class syllabus to guide you through all the assignments required for the course. I have also attached the classroom policies to this announcement to know your expectations for this course. Please review this document carefully and ask me any questions if you do. You could email me at any time or send me a message via the “message” icon in halo if you need to contact me. I check my email regularly, so you should get a response within 24 hours. If you have not heard from me within 24 hours and need to contact me urgently, please send a follow up text to. I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. Your assignments in weeks 4 and 5 require early planning as you would need to present a teaching plan and interview a community health provider. I advise you look at the requirements for these assignments at the beginning of the course and plan accordingly. I have posted the YouTube link that explains all the class assignments in detail. It is required that you watch this 32-minute video as the assignments from week 3 through 5 require that you follow the instructions to the letter to succeed. Failure to complete these assignments according to instructions might lead to a zero. After watching the video, please schedule a one-on-one with me to discuss your topic for your project by the second week of class. Use this link to schedule a 15-minute session. Please, call me at the time of your appointment on my number. Please note that I will NOT call you. Please, be advised I do NOT accept any assignments by email. If you are having technical issues with uploading an assignment, contact the technical department and inform me of the issue. If you have any issues that would prevent you from getting your assignments to me by the deadline, please inform me to request a possible extension. Note that working fulltime or overtime is no excuse for late assignments. There is a 5%-point deduction for every day your assignment is late. This only applies to approved extensions. Late assignments will not be accepted. If you think you would be needing accommodations due to any reasons, please contact the appropriate department to request accommodations. Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements. Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week. I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!

- 02The problem, intervention, initiative, educational need or team project in focus.
- 03The setting or context where it can be observed.
- 04A high-detail description of it.
- 05Its effect.
- 06Its significance and implications for nursing practice.
- 07A proposed solution with its effect on nursing practice.
- 08A minimum of eight peer-reviewed sources from the last five years.
From the topic to the proposed solution
The topic and its category
Name the focus and the setting in which it is observable.
Description in detail
Set out the problem with the granularity the rubric asks for.
Effect
Quantify what the problem currently costs in outcomes, time or safety.
Significance for nursing practice
Argue why nursing specifically should act on this.
Proposed solution
State the change and what nurses would do differently.
Check the evidence base before committing
Recommended databases
- PubMed Central
- CINAHL
- GCU library
- Worldviews on Evidence-Based Nursing
Search sequence
- 1.Search on the specific clinical problem first, filtered to the last five years, so you find out whether an evidence base exists before committing to the topic.
- 2.Look for quality improvement reports in comparable settings, which model the level of detail the description section requires and often supply the baseline figures for the effect.
- 3.Find implementation literature on barriers and facilitators, since the proposed solution has to be plausible in a real unit rather than optimal in the abstract.
- 4.Check every candidate source's publication year and peer-review status before counting it, because eight is a minimum against two filters and the shortfall is usually discovered too late.
Quality improvement and implementation evidence
These are authoritative starting points, not a ready-made bibliography. A qualified reviewer must confirm that each source fits the assignment and supports the claim beside which it is cited.

- Naming a setting generically instead of the actual unit.
- Describing the issue in general terms when high detail is required.
- Leaving the effect unquantified.
- Answering effect and significance with the same paragraph.
- Proposing a solution without saying what nurses would do differently.
- Proposing a solution that would not move the effect that was cited.
- Counting guidelines or professional press toward the eight peer-reviewed sources.
- Including sources older than five years.
- Adding an abstract the brief says is not required.
Submission checklist
- The category of focus is named in the first sentence and used throughout.
- The setting is the specific unit where practice hours occur.
- The description carries detail that could only come from observation.
- The effect is quantified.
- Significance makes a professional argument distinct from the effect.
- The solution states what changes in nursing workflow and who owns it.
- The solution addresses the effect that was quantified.
- At least eight sources are peer-reviewed and within five years.
